ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- On Saturday, June 1, 2024, three young ladies will be vying for the coveted crown of Miss Teen British Virgin Islands, when the pageant is held at Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town.

One of those contestants will be 19-year-old Miss Asha Alexandria Symona Hyndman, who describes herself as poised and vibrant.

Future Ophthalmologist

In an exclusive with Virgin Islands News Online, Hyndman, a graduate of First Impressions Primary School, and the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of the Virgin Islands, said her platform is titled 'Looking Good: Eye Care Education For All.'

Hyndman explained that the mission is to educate, advocate, and motivate individuals and communities about proper and effective eye health in the [British] Virgin Islands and beyond. “I have already begun promoting my platform by partnering with the Lions Club of Tortola, donating 50% of all proceeds raised from Miss Popularity to their eye care initiatives. Additionally, I am looking forward to collaborating with MALE - Mentoring Anointed Leaders Everywhere, as I have been invited to speak with them and will be choosing the topic of eye care."

Not surprisingly, Hyndman is working towards becoming an ophthalmologist.

“Initially, I aspired to be a veterinarian due to my profound love and passion for animals. However, after being diagnosed with Keratoconus and experiencing firsthand the incredible work of ophthalmologists and opticians in various eye clinics, I was inspired to shift my focus. Witnessing these dedicated doctors help others see the world ignited my desire to make a similar impact on people's lives, just as my doctors have done for me.”

Facing fears

Hyndman said she decided to contest for the title of Miss Teen BVI to face her fears and showcase her versatility.

“Although I am no stranger to the lights, camera, and action lifestyle through dancing, public speaking, and stilt-walking, pageantry is a new and challenging endeavour for me.

“Initially, I was apprehensive about the harsh criticism regarding modeling, speaking, and overall performance; however, I realised that overcoming these fears would help me reach my full potential as the multifaceted individual that I know I am. Additionally, I am passionate about promoting my mission, which is a testimony to my strength and truth. Facing my biggest fear while advocating for my passion.

Favourite quote

Hyndman shared that her favourite quote is, 'The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of them all,' taken from the Disney movie Mulan.

“This resonates with me because I have faced many trials and tribulations, yet I have always emerged stronger and more beautiful.”

Role models

The aspiring ophthalmologist said her role models include her mother, for her resourcefulness and intelligence.

“She has always been a source of strength and wisdom in my life.”

Additionally, Hyndman said she admires Dr Patricia Bath, an African American pioneering ophthalmologist whose innovative work and commitment to eye health have significantly impacted the field, “aligning with my own passion for promoting eye care.”

Issues facing teenagers

Hyndman said of the many issues teenagers face today, eye care issues make the list although not much attention is paid to them.

She said eye care issues include lack of awareness, limited access to services, and the impact of excessive screen time.

“Educating teens on regular eye check-ups, proper screen usage, and protective eyewear is essential. Schools and communities can help by providing resources and organizing awareness campaigns. Collaborating with eye care professionals for screenings and workshops can ensure teens receive the care and information needed for healthy vision,” Hyndman shared.

Message to the public

Hyndman was asked what message she had for the public ahead of the Miss BVI Teen Pageant.

“Firstly, I would love to give my biggest thanks to God as he continues to guided me throughout this journey. I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my mom Sasha Hodge, my sponsors, my family and friends, my team in St Thomas and abroad. I adore you all.

“To the public, I would like to express my gratitude for your support and encouragement. The Miss Teen BVI Pageant is not just a competition; it's a platform for young women to showcase their talents, advocate for important causes, and inspire others. I am excited to share my journey with you and promote the importance of eye health. Together, we can make a positive impact in our community and beyond.”

The other contestants for the Miss Teen BVI Pageant are Tiya Herbert and Eriel Stewart.
