McMaster, Huggins & Hayde impress at Nat Jr C/ships
Chilly winds, showers and a sparse crowd did little to deter the spirited performances of some of the territory's leading young athletes as they made final attempts to reach a Carifta Games qualifying standard.
The meet was highlighted by Nelda Huggins, the ever improving Arianna Hayde and the in-form Kyron McMaster.
Huggins completed her sprint double with times of 11.85 in the 100 and 24.95 in the 200. Keshema Fleming from St Thomas grabbed 200m silver in a time of 26.69 and Xiamora Malone came home third with a time of 27.36.
In the 100m Final, Huggins held off L’Tsha Fahie, who ran 12.01 and Kala Penn’s 12.40.
“I wasn’t happy with the time in the 200, as it was slower than the Carifta qualifying time but I ran a good race and followed my coach's instructions. In the 100, now, I ran a qualifying time and although I know I can do better I was happy with the time. Being Sprint Double Champion is a great feeling and I know any time I go to Carifta I will do my best and win medals,” Huggins said.
Beyonce Defreitas romped to a 400m Gold medal in the U20 400m’s in a time of 56.89 beating out the challenge from Zakharia Frett (58.58) and Kelsha Fortune, who came third in 59.38.
Mariah Christian took 800m Gold in a thrilling finish as she just held off Akada Charles and Z’Niah Hutchinson at the line. Her winning time was 2:37.77 to Charles’ 2:37.90 and Hutchinson’s 2:37.96. Christian also won the 1500m Open in a time of 5:45.66 ahead of Charles (5:55.88), J’Sally O’Neal (6:00.72) and T’Keyah Richardson (6:20.43).
In the Field Events, Arianna Hayde won Gold in the U20 High Jump and Long Jump, but will be going to the Carifta Games, not as a Heptahlete, nor as a High Jumper. “I’m only doing Javelin this time, it’s been going really well this season and I have thrown 39m already,” she said.
She won the Javelin with a throw of 38.90 ahead of Shamica Glasgow’s 29.23 and Ashley Penn’s 21.78.
Hutchinson won the U18 version of the High Jump and Dekoya Hodge the U18 Shot Put. Kiwanna Emmanuel won the U18 Discuss ahead of Akayla Sylvester and Kala Penn the U20 Long Jump.
Master McMaster!
Kyron McMaster won the 200 and 400m events at the Championships. “Today was just a day when I said I would come out and enjoy myself, no pressure, no stress and just move my hands and legs. My time in the 200m was a season’s best, but Hurdles are still my focus,” he said.
McMaster finished the 400 in 48.53 ahead of Ronique Todman’s 49.49 and Tarique Moses’ 49.56.
In the 200m, the same pair of McMaster and Todman finished in 21.87 and 22.70, whilst Ebenezer Joseph grabbed third in a time of 22.78.
K’Cei Moses also completed a sprint double in the U18 Boys 100 and 400m with times of 11.23 and 52.18 respectively.
Joshua Hill was second in the 400m with a time of 52.61 and Gevon Smith third in 54.85. Rikkoi Brathwaite came home second in the 100 with a time of 11.31 and Jonta Charles was third in 11.49. Dylan Moses won the U20 Boys Shot Put.
