ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A man, who is believed by many to be mentally ill, allegedly stabbed another in the Claudette “Boopie” Smith Festiville in Road Town, last evening July 27, 2012.

According to hospital sources, the victim is identified as a resident from Crabbe Lot and suffered a single stab wound to his back. He was also said to still be a patient at the hospital up to last evening July 27, 2012 but in a stable condition.

Police Information Officer Diane Drayton confirmed to this news site that Matthew Hart was charged today July 28, 2012 with inflicting grievous bodily harm.

It is alleged that there was an argument between the two men which resulted in the stabbing.

The incident allegedly took place sometime after 10 p.m. where one patron at the event told this news site that she saw Hart with a knife in his hand arguing with the victim.

The very upset patron claimed, as a public spirited citizen, she went and alerted an officer nearby. However, the young lady said when she told the Police he allegedly asked, “where” and did not seem to have taken her seriously as she pointed out the area where the assailant was with the knife.

The young lady said it was about 10 minutes later that she saw Police and others running towards an area and realized that the man was stabbed.

Choosing to remain anonymous, she said such actions by the Police is what lead persons not to want to share information with them as she felt they could have avoided the incident had they acted when she informed them.

However, Police Information Officer Drayton said she could not confirm the woman's claims, but it was unlikely she would be ignored with such information.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee, Marvin Blyden, when contacted said the incident was very unfortunate but the committee is putting measures in place to ensure such occurrences do not happen again.

“I have talked to the two security companies and assured them it wasn’t their fault and it was free and he was probably in there from high day,” Mr. Blyden said.

He further encouraged patrons to come out and support the events with the Calypso competition slated for this evening from 9 p.m. prior to an official opening ceremony at 8.

where is the facility that the NDP promised for these type of people???? In the mean time while they find excuses and buy time for another of their broken promises why don't they think outside the box and use the old prison to house them.

I said it before and I am going to say it again...we need a mental health facility to place these people in. Matthew was in prision for a bit and now out, he is always getting in some trouble.
