SCRUB ISLAND, VI- A massive spotted eagle ray sculpture now rests beneath the waters off Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina in the Virgin Islands.

Measuring approximately 22 feet from head to tail and 16 feet from wingtip to wingtip, the sculpture was installed on October 2, 2026, in partnership with VI-based nonprofit Beyond The Reef and is designed to become a living artificial reef.

Over time, the structure will provide a surface for coral growth and habitat for marine life, while creating a new underwater attraction for resort guests, snorkelers and visitors.

According to Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, the installation is part of Scrub Island’s partnership with Beyond The Reef to help protect and restore the VI’s marine ecosystem.

Beyond The Reef's work includes artificial reef creation, coral health initiatives, shark and cetacean research, and removal of abandoned "ghost" fishing gear from VI waters.

Whilst I applaud the initiative, I hope that due care and skill was exhibited in the sourcing of materials for the sculpture and that we are not introducing harmful matter (plastics, chemicals and metals) into the ocean and its creatures, great and small we are seeking to protect, some of which may make their way onto our plates.
