LONDON, United Kingdom- Mary Elizabeth Truss, known to many as 'Liz Truss', will become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom (UK) after defeating Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest.

Ms Truss, who was the favourite to win, will succeed Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, and become the nation's third female leader.

The foreign secretary used her victory speech to indicate she would not trigger an early general election, instead pledging to secure "a great victory for the Conservative Party in 2024".

Truss thanks her 'friend' Boris

In a short speech after the result was announced, she issued her thanks to her "friend" Mr Johnson, who controversially allowed his buddy and former governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert to controversially call a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the Virgin Islands during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when he [Johnson] used the same pandemic as an excuse to reject calls for a CoI into his own government.

"You got Brexit done. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn. You rolled out the vaccine and you stood up to Vladimir Putin," Truss said.

Mr Johnson, who was forced to resign after a wave of ministers left his government over a series of controversies, will visit the Queen at Balmoral to formally tender his resignation tomorrow.

Reacting to Ms Truss's victory, Mr Johnson said she "has the right plan to tackle the cost of living crisis, unite our party and continue the great work of uniting and levelling up our country".

Ms Truss did not enjoy the support of the majority of MPs during the parliamentary stage of the contest, with Mr Sunak coming out on top among fellow Tories.

Tories believe in 'freedom, low taxes & personal responsibility'- Truss

In her victory speech, Ms Truss reiterated her promise to "deliver a bold plan" to cut taxes and grow the economy.

"I will deliver on the energy crisis dealing with people's energy bills, but also dealing with the long term issues we have on energy supply," she said.

She said Tory beliefs in freedom, low taxes and personal responsibility "resonate with the British people".

Mr Sunak and Ms Truss were whittled down to the final two candidates after five rounds of voting by Tory MPs.

The pair went head-to-head over a summer of hustings and live television debates, during which they clashed repeatedly over their plans for the economy.

Party members had from August 1 to September 2, 2022, to cast their votes, which were counted over the weekend.

Ms Truss will officially become prime minister tomorrow, when she will travel to Balmoral to meet the Queen, who will invite her to form a government.

She will then return to Downing Street, where she is expected to make her first speech as prime minister and begin forming her cabinet.

Time for women. Men being too corrupt..One Issue with women, they are too conservative, they don't like spending money,..They keep the country treasury money like their own under lock and key..they need to learn to invest, especially in people...

The first women prime minister, Mrs Thatcher, was the best leader the world has even seen. The second, Mrs May, tried to sign the UK up to a terrible deal with the UK that suggests that she was a traitor. Time will tell how Mrs Truss does but the free world should give praise that Mr Sunak did not win.

Why does this site use their full names, nobody in the UK knows her as Mary or Boris by what other middle names always appear on this site. Very strange

This news site caters to a VI public, not a UK public and has a duty to inform and educate us here in the VI. What is wrong with telling us here in the VI what is the full name of these persons; plus the news site noted that she is also known as Liz Truss.

No problem saying what her full name is but to use a full name every time referring to someone is odd. Maybe it is part of those old beliefs that you can control people via the use of their name?

I think the overuse of “de Pfeffel” on this site is simply sarcastic

It is very strange, but so is "de Pfeffel" I mean it really shows that you come from a long line of complete wan*ers when your parents choose that twaddle for your middle name.

If you do not believe that the Uk has a governance problem, since 2016, this is their 4th prime minister, David Cameron, 2010-2016, Theresa May's Boris Johnson and now Liz Truss. The only reason the conservatives are still in power is because the other side have had some weak @££ candidates for the last 12 years. Mark my words if they have another election before the next two years, they done. These are the same folks that is telling us about our government and governance.

Corbyn was not a weak candidate by any stretch of the imagination. He had decades of excellent ideas and integrity. So much so that the Tories cooked up an anti-Semitic campaign to derail him. Unfortunately, they were successful and now the opposite side really has some atrociously weak leadership.
