Many violated ‘no dogs allowed’ notice- Beach goers

WEST END, Tortola, VI- Despite a Government imposed restriction on animals at beaches, dogs were as many as there were humans out on the first day of the reopening of beaches in the Territory on Sunday, May 10, 2020.

Several persons complained to our newsroom of the blatant disregard of the rule, adding that some violators were even upset when told of the restriction on animals, including dogs.

Persons are allowed on all beaches, except The Baths and Devil's Bay on Virgin Gorda, from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm for exercise and therapy only and animals are not allowed 'until further notice'.

"I was out just checking out some beaches down West [End] and every last beach had persons running, walking and sea bathing their dogs against government's restrictions," a concerned resident told VINO.

According to the Tortola resident, who requested not to be named, he was met with aggressive attitude and verbal abuse when informing the lawbreakers of their actions.

"Man you wouldn't believe how rude and obnoxious people can be even when approached in the most polite and mannerly way."

Threatened

The local man said he thought most persons missed the note of "No Dogs allowed" on beaches during this phase of the reopening.

“Most of them were rude as hell. One has the idiocy to threaten to smash my phone if I were to video or take his photo but I wasn't even thinking of doing that. I am aware of the rule and I was only informing them just in the event that the police came and could arrest them, that's all."

He further said, "There were a few though who picked up their dogs and left when told of the violation.

I saw one person at Long Bay, West End and she was happy about me informing her. She put the dog in her vehicle and continued her exercise. An elderly woman said her dog is a guard but cooperated by stating she was going to leave and walk the street instead."

Both Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert had warned that should persons fail to comply with the COVID-19 beach regulations the ban would be reinstated.

So I suppose this person is thrilled by his story actually being published. So we are now having to read tattle tales reports and this is news? Please report what all those people who died at home, died of. Now that is news we need. We need to know they were COVID19 tested and were negative. That would be journalism.

@ Small minded people. This is news because some people feel they are above the law. The Government said "NO PETS" on the beaches so HUMANS can exercise, and they brought them anyway. A lot of people are afraid or allergic to dogs, cats, etc, and will be hindered from enjoying their freedom on the beaches. Why do people feel their pets cannot stay home? I have seen them even bring them into eating establishments. They play dumb like they didn't know...Well now all of you know!

Can Your Pet Get the New Coronavirus?
      https://www.google.vg/amp/s/feeds.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2020/pets-coronavirus.html%3f_amp=true

Cases are rare, but it can happen. Here’s how to lower infection risks for humans and animals.

A small number of pets worldwide, including cats and dogs, have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, “mostly after close contact with people with COVID-19,”...

Physical distancing is a key preventative measure. Public health experts recommend keeping your pet away from other people and animals outside the household.

Avoid dog parks and public spaces where dogs gather to play, and when on walks, keep your dog at least 6 feet from other people and animals....

    • @Honest Mistake (12/05/2020, 02:52) Like (6) Dislike (3) Reply
One reason maybe the fact that some people sleep with they dogs and have them all throughout their homes. If someone is carrying the virus it can be all over the dog’s fur. Also some people are allergic to dogs, and sneezing can spread the virus a long distance.
  • Greg (11/05/2020, 15:05) Like (24) Dislike (5) Reply
This is simple to control. Daily, have police go to beaches. If they see anyone with pets there, give them a fine for disobeying they law. If they do it again, hit them with an enormous fine. Third time, they go to jail. It's just that simple. People are spitefully bringing their dogs everyday, I see them, so the police can see them as well. Case Closed!

Are people not missing the point? There has been no explanation (or discussion) as to why this extra restriction of our freedom has been imposed. Is there a connection that the BVI has discovered (that no other country has) between walking an animal on the beach and an explosion of Covid 19?

If the government are taking issue with dogs on beaches, then raise it and have an orderly debate. Don't use Covid Emergency provisions to suddenly impose new unrelated restrictions on people. It sets a dangerous precedent. "paper clipping" rules like this to emergency legislation should not be taken lightly.

For those who love to blindly follow the rules, go read some history.

A dog once tried to attack my family and I as we were walking on that beach. I was very much pregnant and scared. My children were also scared. The owners sat quietly and watched this happening until my husband found a piece of wood and attempted to hit the dog. The owner then saw it fit to call his dog and to let my husband know not to hit the dog that he allowed to come after us. Can you imaging the nerve of that man?

I think that dogs should be barred from the beaches within certain hours and especially in the popular beaches.

This disregard of the law is quite troubling, as are so many others I am observing and hearing about, including but not limited to the two solemn gatherings over the past two weekends with way over 20 persons in attendance per videos that were circulated (with our law keepers in attendance at the first one). Also the forty odd cyclists, some with a passenger, that terrorized Tortola yesterday; the people sporting masks as if they are fashion statements with nose/mouth uncovered, or walking around without any; the people up in one another's faces; the persons who are not obeying the take-out laws.

What these law-breakers do not realize is that they are compromising other persons' health and wellbeing. Covid-19 has no favorites, and if we do not watch sharp, we may be back in quarantine more sooner than what later.

Anyone with half a brain is aware of the historically problematic relationship Between the descendants of slaves and dogs Due to the weaponization of dogs by slave owners. Even many generations later, a powerful unease around dogs exists in many people.

During those precious few hours granted for exercise, bathing and relaxing we all share the beach. When I’m walking, I don’t know if your ‘sweet’ dog is going to sense my fear and go on the attack. I know from personal experience that neither do you. I was not comfortable using my beach when I saw the number of unleashed dogs on it Sunday.

When this is over, maybe we can revisit this and dedicate a couple of our beaches for families and unleashed dogs. For now- keep your dogs home.

So are you saying that you will break the law by bringing your mongrel to the beach anyway, and if your mongrel gets poisoned, on the same beach which you were not supposed to be bringing them to, that the BVI will have a big problem? Oh no, you have it backwards. You first, will be fined for having your dog on the beach. Second, you think you can bully our lawmakers because you broke the law in the first place and got your dog poisoned? You have one twisted warped mind. Third, your mongrel is not more important than people who love and need the beach. Fourth, no matter how much you love your mongrel, we love our families more, and if you don't care about our families, as soon as the border opens up again, LEAVE!!! If you continue to break the laws again, I hope they throw you and your mongrel in prison! I hope I see you out there, I will call the police and show them the picture I just took of you and you mongrel. I don't know or care where you come from, but you will not bully anyone here, I guarantee it!
