Man says he fought in self-defence, pleads guilty to weapon possession
While at the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday August 14, 2012, where Magistrate Tamia Richards presided, Mr. Mathias pleaded guilty to a charge of being armed with an offensive weapon with intent to commit a crime, namely (1 leather man knife).
According to court records, it is alleged that on July 6, 2012 in the vicinity of a sol gas station, police observed Mr. Mathias on the ground beating on someone, while at the same time having a Leatherman knife ready to wound.
Court records stated that when an officer in plain clothes asked the defendant to hand over the knife, he said “The man jump me and you aint do nothing about it and now I pull my knife you come and hold me.”
The accused told the court that his knife being in his hand, and looking like he was about to stab the person, was all in self-defence.
Meanwhile, Leslie-Ann Faulkner, who appeared for the Crown indicated that the story told to the court by the defendant is a fabricated one.
The Crown stated that the defendant interfered with the victim first then threw his drink in his face, and then the fight began.
The court understood that the fight was a result of the victim playing music too loud.
