Man gets 4 years for 3kg of 'weed'
According to the allegations, the incident allegedly occurred on January 13, 2012 in the vicinity of ZBVI Radio station in Baughers Bay where the Special Investigating Unit of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) reportedly observed that the motor vessel, Oriole, arrived at its regular dock area in Baughers Bay.
Around 6:30PM a four-door vehicle occupied by a driver and a passenger drove to the docking area, and it was observed that the vehicle was parked in close proximity to the vessel, the court heard.
It was further alleged that a passenger of the said vehicle approached the Oriole and met with a crew member of that boat. He then returned to his vehicle with a black bag. When police approached the man, he allegedly dropped the bag and ran. He was chased, apprehended shortly after and later identified as Christopher.
The black bag contained several packs of what was believed to be marijuana. The drugs reportedly weighed 3.18 kilos and had an estimated value of $31,880.
Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards read the mitigating factors before sentencing in the matter and noted that the defendant appeared contrite while he had been placed on remand awaiting sentence.
Christopher had initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea and attorney. He was represented by Corine George. His sentence will run from the date he was first remanded.
The defendant was recently found not guilty in a similar but unrelated matter.

The drug can affect more than your physical health. Studies in Australia in 2008 linked years of heavy marijuana use to brain abnormalities. This is backed up by earlier research on the long-term effects of marijuana, which indicate changes in the brain similar to those caused by long-term abuse of other major drugs. And a number of studies have shown a connection between continued marijuana use and psychosis.
Marijuana changes the structure of sperm cells, deforming them. Thus even small amounts of marijuana can cause temporary sterility in men. Marijuana use can upset a woman’s menstrual cycle.
