Man found dead in abandoned well in USVI identified by DNA
FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI — The identity of a man found in an abandoned well in Estate Richmond, St Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI) on January 15, 2015 has been determined through DNA testing, [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced Friday, November 11, 2016.
The man has been identified as John Bastian, age 54, of Estate Richmond. Police say the family now has closure, and thanked them for their cooperation in the matter.
On January 15, 2015 police were dispatched to Richmond after a decomposing body was found in an abandoned well located south of Contentment Road in the bushes.
The body was extracted from the well by members of St Croix Rescue using a stokes basket. The remains were in approximately 3 feet of water when the body was discovered, according to Mr Dratte.
The VIPD is also seeking cooperation from community members who may have a family member or friend missing. The remains of an adult male recovered on Mahogany Road in the vicinity of the crusher, on July 21, 2016 is still unidentified, according to police. He was a black male with short, grey hair and facial hair, approximately 5’6, with a medium to slim body.
