Man fatally shot @ Harbor View USVI; Possible suspect taken for questioning
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St. Croix, USIV— A fatal shooting occurred Thursday at the Harbor View Housing Community in St. Croix, leading to an active investigation by local authorities, VIPD Director of Communications Glen Dratte has confirmed.
The incident, which took place near Building 8 in the Christiansted area, prompted a swift response from emergency services and law enforcement.
According Mr. Dratte, at approximately 11:20 a.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received multiple reports of a shooting. Callers reported that a male had been shot in the head.
The VIPD, along with FIRE EMS, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB), and Forensic units, were dispatched to the scene. EMS transported the victim to Juan Luis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical emergency attendants.
The deceased has been identified by next of kin as 23-year-old Tyree Rentas.
The VIPD swiftly apprehended a possible suspect, who was taken into custody for questioning. The investigation into this case is ongoing, and authorities are actively seeking information from the public. Mr. Dratte said this incident marks the 19th homicide in the territory for 2024, with 12 occurring on St. Thomas and 7 on St. Croix.
