Man convicted of stabbing wife now facing rape charges!

- Broke to pay lawyer’s fees

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Samuel James, currently serving a 12-year prison term for stabbing his wife, is now facing two counts of alleged rape and told a High Court Judge that he is too broke to get an attorney to represent him at trial.

The Antiguan national, during an appearance in the High Court yesterday, May 7, 2012, informed Justice Albert Redhead that he saw no sense in getting a lawyer since he was already in prison.

However, the Judge instructed the prison officer in attendance to assist the prisoner in filing the necessary documents for legal aid. James has to return to court on May 30, 2012.

Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe too had suggested for him to get legal representation because the charges are “serious ones”.

The father of four is accused of allegedly raping a woman – the Virtual Complaint (VC) - twice at his Huntums Ghut home in 2011.

According to court records, the first alleged rape occurred on January 12, 2011 when the VC visited James’ home. The VC claimed that the Antiguan national threatened to cut her throat if she did not have sex with him.

The VC was allegedly told to lie down on the bed before James forced himself on her.

Meanwhile, on January 13, 2011, court records also revealed, James allegedly slapped the woman and raped her again.

As the dates are consecutive could it not be that the first rape was on the evening of the 12th and the next in the morning of the 13th? Until you know the details perhaps it is best to not comment. Rape is a serious issue and a woman raped is a woman broken.
