Man attempts suicide in RT Police Station

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A man in custody of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), attempted to take his own life using a belt, in a Road Town Police Station cell, on Friday, June 22, 2018, sometime between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM.

According to reports, police ranks caught the man attempting to hang himself, but managed to foil the suicide attempt.

The man had been arrested on allegations of robbery. It is unclear if he has been changed.

Virgin Islands News Online was told the man was immediately transported to Peebles Hospital and is currently a patient in the ‘Behavioral’ ward.

Statistics for suicide in the Virgin Islands are not widely available.

    Just asking, when someone is arrested, I thought belts and shoelaces were taken of the prisoner before he/she is placed in the cell.

    @My understanding, I was thinking the same thing. I thought belts, shoelaces and other properties were suppose to be taken from a prisoner before being placed in a cell to avoid something like what happened.

    It’s sad they tried to do that. Only if people could pre-feel the pain and judgement before it actually happened they maybe most will rethink before committing a lawful crime.......
