Malone edging closer to Olympic Qualifying!

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Running at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday March 17, 2012, the Virgin Islands Chantel Malone beat the USVI’s Allison Peters by .20 seconds to win the 400m dash.

Running “unattached” and aiming to join Tahesia Harrigan-Scott on the BVI’s Team for London 2012, Malone started her outdoor competition by finishing third in the 200m with a time of 23.64.

Chalonda Goodman of Texas ran an impressive 23.26 seconds (1.2) to win the event.

Malone returned to win the 400m dash in a time of 54.92, .20 seconds ahead of the USVI’s Allison Peter who ran 55.12.

There are 24 men's events and 23 women's events at the London 2012 Olympics and the IAAF target number of athletes for the Games is 2,000. Nations are able to enter up to three athletes per event provided they have achieved the A standard and one athlete per event if they have achieved the B standard.

The qualifying period started on May 1, 2011 and ends on July 8, 2012. Relay qualification is between January 1, 2011 to July 2, 2012.

The “A” Standard for the Women’s 200 is 23.10, whilst the “B” Standard is at 23.30. In the 400m it is 51.50 and 52.30 respectively.

St. Kitts and Nevis Tameka Williams won the women’s 100m in 11.23 (3.5).

Also over the weekend , the Illinois women's track and field team kicked off the outdoor season with a number of solid performances at the Black and Gold Challenge hosted by the University of Central Florida, including the 4 x 100m relay squad of sophomore Breeana Coleman, senior Ashley Kelly, junior Kayla Smith and Spencer, who were the champions with a time of 43.82 at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex.

Kelly also ran 11.82 in the 100m to place 4th.

While the majority of the country was tuned in to the NCAA Tournament and checking their brackets, the Morgan State women's track and field team was opening up its outdoor season competing at the Wake Forest Open held at Kentner Stadium.

Britney Wattley ran a time of 12.05, good for fifth during the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash.

The Meet was shortened by a storm and Wattley did not contest the final.
