Major road & water supply upgrades for Manchester
These works mark a significant step forward in improving the Territory's infrastructure.
Speaking from the project site with Government Information Officer Giovanni M.S. Herbert in a video released on the government’s Facebook Page on December 9, 2024, Minister Rymer explained the dual objectives of the work currently underway.
“We are trying to address it by putting the concrete works there so that we can get a better and more durable surface. But as we do that, we are also installing a new water line to update our water infrastructure,” he said.
Modernisation with durable materials
Key to the water infrastructure upgrades is the use of advanced 12-inch ACP pipes and according to Hon Rymer “We (already) have on-site our ACP pipe, which is a 12-inch exterior sized pipe. We are fusing the pipe now so that, when the works begin in Manchester, we will install it as part of our preparation for a more modern and resilient water distribution system."
Acting Director of the Water and Sewage Department Mr Brian Davis, provided further technical insight into the fusion process, emphasising the durability of the new system, adding that “these types of pipes are much more resilient and are being used to upgrade our aging infrastructure”.
Mr Davis said presently there are a plethora of existing pipes that are very old and prone to frequent breaks, but with the installation of the new pipes they are expected to last anywhere from 80 to 90 years without failure.
The installation process will involve the use of a butt fusion machine, a state-of-the-art tool designed for seamless pipe connections.
The works in Manchester are part of a broader effort to modernise critical infrastructure across the territory, reflecting the government's commitment to sustainable development and long-term resilience.
As such, residents can expect a significant improvement in both road surfaces and water distribution as these projects progress, with assurances from the government that the materials and methods used are designed to stand the test of time.
