Long-time Food Fair participants honoured
The Food Fair, which is taking place at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park in Road Town, saw the presence of many stalls offering various dishes, fruits and vegetables, condiments, sweet treats and other items.
Most of the food and beverage on display and being offered reflect the cultural taste of the VI culture, which is always highlighted during Festival.
Faithful couple
Speaking to this news site today from the grounds of the Food Fair, Director of Culture Luce Hodge-Smith explained the reason why the honourees were so chosen.
“Every year we honour someone who has contributed over the years to the Food Fair and this year for the first time we have a couple, which is Gregory and Marreth. They have contributed and they have reminded me that they used to be a part of the food fair when it was at the Sir Olva Georges Plaza. They were also a part of it when it was over at the Pusser’s Parking lot and when it moved here they moved with it,” she said.
She explained that the couple is not just part of the activity for Festival but also for Agriculture Week. She noted that Marreth specialises in a number of things such as local drinks. “She knows the many varieties of mangoes, she knows the medicinal bush and what they are good for,” said Hodge-Smith, noting that she also does dried and preserved fruit.
Gregory, she noted, makes beautiful bakery products and when one sees what he can do, it is hard to believe that he is visually impaired.
Speaking to this news site, Mr Smith said he was honoured to be recognised for the contribution he and his wife have made over the years.
“People will want to come and participate knowing that they could be honoured for the work that they do,” he said. “Most of the time the Government would honour people when they done dead so in this way at least [people will be encouraged to take part],” he said.
