ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A lot of young people are complaining about the process it takes to acquire a trade license to start-up businesses in the Territory, according to Mr Rajah A. Smith.

Speaking on the EGM Show aired on ZRod 103.7FM on February 13, 2014 Smith said he received a complaint recently about the phenomenon and observed that persons were also made to wait while others who had applied afterwards, received trade licences ahead of them.

Smith also alleged that Government was blocking work permits for a certain business and said the business owner was fearful of coming forward because of the fear of victimization.

“These are all locals we are talking about… young people… and the Government wants to keep talking about how we promote young people as entrepreneurs of tomorrow,” Smith said.

Host of the EGM show, Edmund Maduro remarked that youths have a right to make a living and any Government department or official that prevented that was trampling on individual rights.

He added that trade licenses were a revenue generating measure for Government and also created some level of control over the businesses that were able to be established within the Virgin Islands.

“It’s nonsense, it’s crazy and you can take them to court and get your trade license and make them pay for your court expenses as well,” Maduro said.

No they're not. Do an economic study and you will see. In other words, ask yourself what does the BVI need.
