Local, Reg & Int’ Athletes all set to highlight Twilight!
Not only will fans of Track and Field be able to witness exciting match up’s between some of the Regions best professional athletes, but also the up and coming youngsters who have been putting the Territory on the map internationally.
Carifta Games Stars will be there, as will CAC and Commonwealth Games hopefuls and a plethora of never seen before head to head clashes between athletes who have dominated the sporting pages over the last few seasons.
Action gets underway on Saturday at 5.00pm with the Opening Ceremony and one of the Organisers, Steve Augustine, is already encouraging Fans, Family and Friends to book their seats early in order not to miss out on the tantalizing races and jumps.
“It's going to be even better than last year with even stronger start lists and a whole host of athletes looking to establish records, create history and leave a lasting impression on those who are there to witness a little piece of Caribbean history unfold,” he said.
To underline the growing importance and success of the Meet, President of the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Association, Victor Lopez, will be in attendance as well as numerous Sponsors including the Sage Group of Companies and the VTB Bank.
Tickets are just $12 for general admission and $20 for preferred seating (the red seats in the main stand) and there is also VIP seating right by the finish line for those wanting to be even closer to the action.
In the Women’s 100m Tahesia Harrigan-Scott will be up against Virgin Islands rival Laverne Jones, but the pair will have to watch out for Geronne Black (Trinidad) and Tawanna Meadows (USA) who has a PB (personal best) of 11.11 and is ranked 51 in the World Standings, just four places behind Harrigan- Scott’s 47th position.
In the 200m Karene King who has a ranking of 81st in the world will be up against the world’s Current #10, Bahamian Shaunae Miller, who like King, is embarking on her first season as a Professional Runner.
Kineke Alexander, of St Vincent and the Grenadines, also returns as does Ashley Kelly and Allison Peters from the USVI.
Alexander (#23 in the World) and Miller (#45) also run in the 400m, as will the USA’s Joanna Atkins (#13), Grenada’s Kanika Beckles and Jamaica’s Anastasia Leroy (#46).
The Women’s Long Jump will give local fans a chance to see Virgin Islands’ Chantel Malone, the current World number 73, go up against the USVI’s Wanetta Kirby and American, Witney Gipson, the Worlds number 23 ranked Long Jumper.
The Men’s events also promise some hot action and although Kim Collins has other commitments and will miss the Meet, the 100m features a whole host of sub 10 second performers.
The 400m though will be the one not to miss as Christopher Brown of Barbados will go head to head with last year’s revelation and winner Gustavo Cuesta from the Dominican Republic.
The USVI also has three entrants looking to make a big name for themselves, with Leon Hunt leaping into the sand, David Walters running the 100 and Tabarie Henry the 400m.
The Juniors will also be featuring in invite only selected events with competitors from Guadeloupe, Antigua and Guyana, to name but a few, going against the likes of sprint sensation, Nelda Huggins, Taylor Hill, Tarika Moses, Judine Lacey, Beyonce Defreitas and L’Tsha Fahie.
Amongst the young Boys on show are Kyron Walwyn and Sha’el Lavacia who have already begun what promises to be a fascinating rivalry for years to come.
All in all many athletes will be looking for Records, PB’s, Season Best’s, to establish ascendency over Caribbean Rivalries and just to impress the onlookers.
As Augustine says, “You don’t want to miss this one!”
