ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A local recycling company, Alkebulan Minds Recycling Inc, has stepped forward with a proposal to partner with the Government of the Virgin Islands to set up a state of the art recycling factory in the Territory, a project it says would end up providing employment to some 150 persons.

Alkebulan Minds Recycling Inc, launched in April 2018, is co-owned by Mr Gavin Baird and Mr Shavoy H. Samuels, both Virgin Islanders.

Funding secured for £35M factory- Shavoy H. Samuels

The two entrepreneurs believe they can play a major role in helping the Territory to preserve its invaluable environment, including bringing an end to landfill fires at Pockwood Pond, and add economic value to the Territory with their proposed project.

According to Mr Samuels, Alkebulan Minds Recycling Inc has received funding for their ambitious project, estimated at some £35M, and is now seeking Government approval for the project as well as a working relationship going forward.

‘150 jobs will be created’

It is now hoping for speedy approval to get the project off the ground especially since jobs would be created at a time when the unemployment rate and revenue to the Territory has been significantly affected due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

“We at Alkebulan Minds Recycling Inc, locally incorporated since 2018, have stepped forward to help maintain and help build our local economy. Working alongside Government we can create a new economic pillar while creating over 150 jobs. That’s 150 more citizens paying Social Security, 150 more citizens paying NHI, 150 more citizens being able to provide for their families and more spending power in the Territory, while co-existing in a cleaner environment.”

He said long-term job opportunities for their recycling factory would include boat captains, heavy equipment operators, plant managers, accountants, security personnel and janitorial workers.

Incentives

Mr Samuels added that the intention is to offer incentives to persons to bring in their waste for the project to be successful while getting the community involved.

“You pay masons and labourers to build homes and they get build, you pay teachers and they teach. What I'm saying is our speciality is keeping the environment and the Territory clean by all means and cost necessary so if we have to pay residents to bring their home waste or recyclables we will.”

The state of the art factory envisioned by Alkebulan Minds Recycling Inc will be the first of its kind in the Caribbean, according to Mr Samuels.

“This will put the BVI in the spotlight with the new age waste technology and also create an avenue for the Territory to manufacture its own products, such as toilet paper, writing paper, glass and even biofuel.

Proposal sent to Gov’t

Mr Samuels and Mr Baird also have other plans in mind for handling waste in the Virgin Islands.

“With state of the art machinery we plan on tackling waste that affect our lovely environment by introducing ‘waste to energy’ incinerators, which would be the first of a kind in the whole Caribbean region,” Mr Samuels said.

Mr Samuels said while more details would be forthcoming on the proposed project, a proposal has already been sent to Government for approval and hopes it is met favourably.

I wish you good luck in this present economic climate. I seriously do. I like persons who have the guts to embark upon a project that may work with the right analysis, consultations and the chance to get views from the public (important). I am not sure about your sign? It may throw persons off very early in this stage. Perhaps, it has a meaning but be careful when releasing images to the public upon introduction. But, listen to the public and if you do have a committment for financing do chase your dreams while you pursue the permission from Govt and authorities responsible.

You are the nasty demonic spirit. It is very obvious what you are doing. You jump on every issue with your silly venom in order to spread confusion and distraction. Some people have a desperate need to maintain the status quo.
All nations have learned of the ways of the Old Dragon. This struggle is not about color, class or creed simply good vs evil. Who are you and where do you stand in the struggle. If you don't know what to do or say...shut up and guh siddung.

I have some questions. How much money can be made from sorting garbage after paying 150 employees? Also a 35 million dollar investment is a lot of bucks to build a garbage sorting facility especially in that it seems the facility is using manual labor to sort. (i.e. 150 employees) I just don't understand the economics of the venture.

If you are going to use waste to generate energy it is not renewable. Please be careful with the language you use as it is critical that we all be aware of the education that the public receives through what you say. Using waste to generate energy is the same as using fossil fuels. Plus it competes with any efforts to reduce waste as shackles our nation to have to produce more waste to meet the goal of profit when your profits are tied to selling energy to BVIEC. Solar is renewable. Wind is renewable. Hydro is renewable. Waste ti energy is not renewable.

    Alkebulan - Definition

Did you know that the ancient name of Africa was Alkebulan? "Among the many names, Alkebu-lan ["mother of mankind" or "garden of eden"] was called are the following: "Ethiopia, Corphye, Ortegia, Libya and Africa - the latest of all.

Alkebulan is the oldest and the only one of indigenous origin. It was used by the Moors, Nubians, Numidians, Khart-Haddans (Carthagenians), and Ethiopians. Africa, the current misnomer adopted by almost everyone today , was given to this continent by the ancient Greeks and Romans. "

Kudos to these guys, I wish them the best. On another note it's quite heartbreaking to read some of these comments. The ignorance that is being spewed is mind boggling. Our own people tearing down one another then have the gall to say BLM. I've lived away for a while and coming back to this mentality is depressing. We as a people need to do better. The younger generation is listening, learning and the world is watchig. Selah.

recycling takes far more energy than it saves.....think about it?

This is the reason we recycle to save the planet to save energy , yet it take more....

Now if the government stop the import of single use plastic and no Styrofoam containers that is a way to help.
