Local Educator & Businessman J. Alfred Christopher dies @ age 94
Over the last five years, Mr Christopher- an indigenous Virgin Islander- had experienced declining health but was still active.
He was born on January 1, 1929, and was 94 years of age at the time of his passing.
The late Mr Christopher came from a prominent family of educators and business persons.
In the 1960s, Mr Christopher started out his career as a teacher in the Virgin Islands (VI), teaching both primary and secondary schools, and rose to the position of Acting Chief Education Officer. He taught in many schools throughout the Territory and was highly educated, earning a Master’s Degree.
Lived, Studied, and Worked overseas.
Mr Christopher also lived, studied, and worked abroad in places like New York City, St Thomas in the USVI, and Trinidad and Tobago. While he was married for a short time (divorced), the union produced no children.
The now deceased also served as the President of the BVI Teachers Union and was at one time an Assistant Principal of the then BVI High School. He was also a teacher in St Thomas, USVI.
It was in 1977 when the late Christopher founded the now Hotel Castle Maria in Road Town, an establishment that has remained in business for some 46 years.
He loved people and politics and witnessed firsthand the VI transformed from the days of dirt roads, no electricity, no automobiles to the hub of modernisation, with financial services and high-end tourism.
Many generations of residents, his employees, former colleagues, and friends have spoken highly of Mr Christopher as a teacher, an Education Officer, the Deputy Chief Education Officer, a family person, and a businessman.
The Management and Staff of Virgin Islands News Online offer our condolences to his immediate family and other loved ones.
