Local authors highlighted during annual Book Parade
The Book Parade is an annual event for pre-schools, kindergarten, and first grade levels of schools and sees the participation of a number of schools.
One local author, Dr Quincy F.V. Lettsome, was particularly moved by him being selected for recognition. Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School’s Ronell Jefferson chose to highlight Dr Lettsome.
“His wife, Mrs Kirlin Lettsome, a former principal of Althea Scatliffe Primary School (ASPS) spotted the child in the crowd. She was so excited that she called Dr Lettsome on the phone and he left home and hurried to the site. Upon his arrival, Dr Lettsome was so ecstatic that for the rest of the parade they could not separate him from the child.
Historian and publisher Dr Lettsome spoke to the child and encourage him to write.
“My staff thinks that this was a positive effect of the Book Parade for us especially since Ronell is always filled with excellent ideas,” commented Principal of Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary Valerie Charles-Welch.
Book Parade gets thumbs up
Meanwhile, a caller to this news site who identified herself as Deondeae L. Malone said she was an onlooker as the children paraded through the streets of Road Town.
"I really enjoyed it. Me and some friends were commenting that it was good because I bet for the most part these kids are around with their iPad playing those crazy and creepy games…reading seems to be going out the door so this is nice," said Malone.
"I know some people will not see this as big news that's why I called you guys because while it gives our kids the feeling that they are important and can make the news with things like these, we want to also find more ways to have our kids reading more," Malone stated.
The Book Parade, which was held under the theme ‘Read across the BVI’, was coordinated by Ms Genevieve McMaster, the Acting Education Officer for Early Childhood.

I hope that this experience impacts Ronell and other young students to love reading and writing.
