Life imprisonment without parole for Alcedo Tyson!
Tyson was found guilty of the crime in the High Court on June 24, 2013 and returned before Justice Albert Redhead today for sentencing.
The crown was represented by Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham who stressed that the death of Todd-Rhymer was a hard hit on her family, work colleagues and other loved ones and that it was no telling if they would ever come to grips with the loss of her lively presence.
Graham also said Tyson has no hope of rehabilitation as he has shown no remorse during the social inquiry and “he did not come clean”.
Justice Redhead and the Crown were both at a loss as to the motive for the murder. The judge had even asked Tyson’s lawyer, Patrick Thompson, if he was aware of Tyson having any girlfriend. "He executed Kawanna. I would say that was an execution," Justice Redhead stated.
It was also highlighted from reports that Tyson and Kawanna had an abusive relationship during the time they were together.
While Mr Thompson was making his submission in court this morning leading up to the sentencing, Justice Redhead interjected and told the court, "This court has on emotions. I have no emotions; I am cold as I can be." Thompson was also told by Redhead that he had a mountain to climb in his submission. The defence attorney said Tyson had no record of substance or drug abuse but had not completed high school. He also said that persons who know Tyson have difficulty in associating him with the crime.
Thompson said given the circumstances of the case, a whole life sentence was not warranted and requested 30 years imprisonment for his client. “You are brave, your are brave,” Justice Redhead responded.”
The mother of the victim walked out of the court crying, "Every day I miss my child, everyday, everyday, everyday, everyday. My child gone and he still alive, he should get the death sentence. My child gone forever," wailed the grieving mother.
Mr Bevis Sylvester, Regional General Manager of Delta Petroleum (Caribbean) Limited where Todd-Rhymer worked at the time of her death, said "Justice has been served, a mother lost her child, that life. She will never get over that loss. Justice has been served today."
Todd-Rhymer was found critically wounded in the CSY parking lot in Baughers Bay on the morning of March 16, 2012 and reportedly died before medical personnel arrived on the scene.
Tyson was the number one suspect in the shooting to death of the young woman and he had allegedly turned himself in to police.
