Leroy overcomes East End Torture
Leroy's reign in the JEEP BVI Mountain Series continues after his uncontested win in the East End Torture on Sunday.
lthough he started at Beef Island at a more sedate pace than previous races with a small lead pack nipping at his heels, he quickly left the pack behind once he hit the prison hill climb. The race saw the competitors start and finish near Trellis Bay and climbing the prison hill twice.
With Leroy’s win guaranteed barring catastrophe, the fight was on for second and third place in the lead pack of Iain Walker, Justin Smit and Alastair Abrehart. The pack spread out on the long climb with Iain topping out first, followed by Alastair and Justin. Alastair led the descent until being overtaken by Iain in the fast downhill into East End. However, Iain's advantage was neutralized by Beef Island Bridge, when Alastair and Justin had caught him again.
Alastair, true to form, faded on the second climb up the prison hill, while Iain and Justin climbed away, battling for second and third. Justin beat Iain to the top with a clear margin but Iain nibbled at Justin's lead all the way to, and through, East End. Iain then sat on Justin's tail hiding from the headwind for the ride to the finish on Beef Island, attacked at the airport access road, to take second place.
Unofficial starter Tim Clipstone who, thinking he had missed the start, rode the course anyway, was awarded fourth place. He had in fact, started early and realised his mistake when race leader Leroy came barreling past him.
His position was based on his personal bike computer time.
