ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Legs are once again celebrating a local basketball championship after emerging as the winners of the 2013 Summer League following a 83-71 win over the Kings at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex on Saturday August 17, 2013.

The Legs were the defending champions and were expected to retain their title although the Kings put up a good challenge in the final game as surprise finalists.

Virgin Islands News Online is unable to give you individual stats from the final as President of the BVI Basketball Federation Mr Byron J. Hodge said he is yet to receive such information from a certain official who he has been unable to reach since Saturday.

Nevertheless, we do know that the MVP honours went to the consistent Jasin Edwin.

“We always take pride in representing the team [legs] like in the Summer League. Most of the guys are from the Lower Estate area and every summer we look forward to the league and to come home with the trophy because anything less than the championship is a disappointment for us,” Edwin told Virgin Islands News Online following the win.

However, Edwin said the competition was good and everyone looked forward to the league every year. “This game had a good showing but I wish that next year more of the fans come out to support.”

On his reaction at being named MVP, Edwin said “It just means that the hard work at the end of the day pays off. Even though it is an individual trophy, it shows of the hard work we put into the league.”

Meanwhile, Mr Hodge said the 2013 league left much to be desired in terms of support from fans but had much words of encouragement for the Kings.

“The league was kind of slow. The turnout was not as we had expected. I think that everybody expected that Legs was going to be the champion so they weren’t all that interested. We had one little incident early up in the year but it ended pretty good. Kings put up a really good fight. You know they had their little altercation at the beginning of the season and they still fought through it and ended up in the championship. They showed that they were really hungry for a title. Those guys just need to stick together, put some more pieces together and they could beat legs, Mr Hodge stated.

Meanwhile, the Legs have had a very good year. In March, they took their skills to St Lucia where they played unbeaten in a tournament hosted by the St Lucia Basketball Federation. Legs came home with three wins out of three.
