Lawyers afraid of victimisation regarding Anegada lands- Darrell A. Ruan Jr
In a meeting held at the Emile Dunlop Community Centre last evening, June 30, 2024, Mr Ruan Jr said the pace to settling matters has been slow because, among either things, local lawyers are afraid to take up the case against the government
The meeting, which was moderated by Ruan Jr and the Vice Chairman of the Anegada Land Development Advisory Committee, Gregory Levons Sr, was to update the community on the progress the Committee has made since March 2024 with the VI Government and the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change.
As part of the meeting, the Committee updated the residents on the status of the applications submitted to Cabinet as well as provided vital information concerning Estate/Ancestral Lands.
Local lawyers avoiding case - Chairman
“We are taking the steps, but things are moving around very slowly because the reality of the situation is… and I'm not afraid to say it… No lawyer that we have sought out to, is looking to take this case because the victimisation is serious.”
“They do not want to be put in the limelight or be put to be the ones who sue their very government... Make no mistake ladies and gentlemen, one lawsuit from the right family will destabilise this whole country, and I mean every word I say,” Ruan Jr added.
Since 2023, government representatives have said they were hopeful that at the end of that calendar year, while working in collaboration with Anegada residents, residents would be able to get the title to their lands.
The genesis of the matter is that residents of the area who are owners of lands have been petitioning the government to receive title to their lands.
The chairman admitted that as of yesterday, nothing has been done progressively for some families to receive any of their lands and he is of the opinion that something needs to be done.
Mr Ruan Jr also reiterated a comment by a Sherry-Ann George-Smith.
“We need to take action even when we're told to stop. Keep proceeding because until we stand up for our lands, nothing is going to take place,” Ruan Jr quoted George-Smith as saying.

I seriously doubt this statement. There are so many law suits against the government that local lawyers are dealing with. But if you contend that local lawyers are 'afraid' to take the case, there are so many other options that you could use. Stop it.
