Lawyer Daniel F. Davies enters elections race as Independent At Large candidate
Davies in an open letter published on March 23, 2023, said over the years he has contributed to the Virgin Islands by conducting a number of legal cases and providing legal advice at little or no cost, in addition to assisting in the clean-up of small businesses in the aftermath of the August 2017 floods and his contributions to the discussions of the recovery and redevelopment plans of VI following Hurricane Irma.
VI Youth Advocate
Further, Davies said he was actively involved in fighting to ensure that the local democracy was not hindered by a partial suspension of the Constitution amongst other issues, following the Commission of Inquiry (CoI).
He added that part of his reason for now wanting to be a part of the Virgin Islands House of Assembly is to address issues such as social justice, access to justice, strengthening constitutional rights, fixing the local economy and providing better opportunities for the youth.
“If elected, I will push for higher wages, the creation of a legal aid clinic as a statutory body, the provision of opportunities for our youth both locally and abroad, fight to ensure that everyone in the country is treated fairly and that it is less expensive and tiresome to do business within the Virgin Islands,” he added.
Overhaul of the banking system
Davies said other issues in the VI that need addressing are a lack of fairness within the local banking system as it relates to how customers are treated, their ability to access financing and the glaring lack of proper banking facilities in our sister islands.
“We must put in place regulations to specifically deal with how banks treat their customers. We must also do whatever is necessary to ensure that the people of the Virgin Islands have ready access to capital and that our sister islands have proper and easy access to banking services,” he added.
Davies also plans to address issues relating to access to media services and equipment on the sister islands.
As a practicing lawyer, Mr Davies said the lack of access to justice is a major issue in VI as the cost of obtaining a lawyer is quite high.
“Access to justice is a human right. A publicly funded legal aid clinic is a must to ensure that every member and every economic level of our community will be able to exercise their rights,” he detailed.
Campaign launch date to come
Mr Davies said his 2023 campaign launch will happen in the coming days.
“I look forward to interacting with you throughout and after the campaign season. If you see me on the street, let us have a conversation about how we can improve our country.”
Mr Davies is a Managing Partner of Silk Legal (BVI) Inc.
He was called to the Bar in 2016.

A person may also be qualified to stand for election if they were qualified to stand under the previous Constitution.
The restrictions under the earlier constitution were much more relaxed (a person only needed to be a Belonger, over the age of 21, and resident and domiciled in the British Virgin Islands), and preserving them was intended to preserve the right of any sitting members of the House from accidentally being disqualified. However, the wording used suggests that any person who was so qualified on the day the 2007 constitution came into effect remains so qualified (i.e. any Belonger who was born before 1986 and was resident and domiciled in the British Virgin Islands on the date the 2007 constitution came into effect).
I hope the electorate will give him a chance.
Can you see the true intent of an individual? If you want to catch flies, just use honey. That's what too many of us flies are looking for this talking season. Sing the right tune and it's you I want. Do you honestly think many of these aspiring politians have no hidden agenda? Think again! For some, it's power, others it's 'I've been poor too long and it's time to be rich'. As for me, I'm looking for fear of God, (and YES there is a God just like there is wind!), and consistancy 'for a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways'.
Virgin Islanders it's time to put God first and ask him to help us choose wisely.
A native Virgin Islander to the Nth generation!
