BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The host of the Honestly Speaking radio programme, Mr Claude O. Skelton Cline has said he intends to hold Commissioner of Police Mr Michael B. Matthews’ feet to the proverbial fire on the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s failure to adequately arrest the matter of smuggling through the Territory’s border.

Questions for the CoP

“I got to call my good friend, Commissioner Matthews, because I need him to answer some questions. Because also we are hearing in tandem in all of this, is that the ongoing trafficking, smuggling, back and forth on our borders!” he said during his show on ZBVI 780AM on Thursday, August 20, 2020.

He continued: “We have a joint task force of which the Commissioner of Police is responsible for. Commissioner Matthews we are going to need you to explain to us what exactly is taking place? What is happening out there? Do you have the resources you need? Do you have the manpower you need? Because clearly there are some people who are taking a calculated risk and it can’t be a case where we are just reckless, what is it that is happening? Who is complicit along these lines? Why are we not capturing, how are persons moving back and forth?”

Community spread of virus

The commentator pointed out that the Territory can ill-afford to have an outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus Disease, pointing out that: “We need law enforcement to you do y’all job.”

Coincidentally, Mr Skelton-Cline’s comments came a day before 9 new COVID-19 cases were announced in the Territory. The cases have all been related to community spread.

Since the borders closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, officers from the Customs, Immigration and Police joined forces to form a joint task force to patrol the porous borders.

Sea borders on 24-hour patrol & watch

Despite this new task force and added available human resources, persons have reportedly still able to enter illegally, putting residents at risk.

Meanwhile, Health Minister, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) announced on August 21, 2020, that effective immediately the sea borders are under 24-hour patrol and watch at all points to protect the lives and livelihoods of our people.

“Once again we strongly urge all members of the public to comply with all established health and safety protocols and dial 311 to report any suspicion or evidence of people smuggling into the Territory. If you are engaged in illegal movement of persons, once again stop. It endangers lives, it hurts our community, you will be caught and you will be persecuted,” Hon Malone warned.

After all said and done, this is attempted murder. Just like AIDS. You all know better. This is life and death reasons why people needs to be put in Q,tine, charge, and then put in jail. Innocent people trying to do their best , and selfish J,A*es playing games. This is no JOKE. If the law use only one as an example with ten years in jail, the rest would stop.
My take to solve the smuggling is this . Who came in illegally have to know who brought them in. So if they will not fork up the name, then do the time for that person along with yours. TEN X 2 = 20 YRS no PAROLE. NEXT CASE

The problem here is cultural. People don’t inform the police, the police rarely respond which may be because of the corruption of officers who tip off those they are coming after, the DPP magistrates are pathetic in enforcing the most serious crimes and the statute is not fit for purpose. There is a lot to sort out but it should not be too hard to pick off some of the illegal vessels, seize and sell them and have sturdy sentences for those who are the criminals doing this. And to everyone who knew what was going on, shame and a pox on you.

It's human nature to blame someone else for everything that's gone wrong. your own people are the ones breaking the laws and you blaming everyone but yourself. This kind of attitude will bring BVI backward not foward. Dont forget what made you what you are today. It's not you yourselves.

It's business. There is a demand for strippers/escorts in the BVI but not enough are here to satisfy this demand so they import. The police just have not figured out how this business operates - yet. This business is not that complicated. This business needs lots of fast boats, skillfull nocturnal skippers, various sexy vehicles with heavily tinted windows, some motorcycles, lots of available empty apartments all over Tortola and the strip clubs where the cash flows. Now its time for some real detectives to get to work!

This is another political attack on the expatriates on a different front. The Minister wants them out and now the talk show host is attacking them on a different level. Mr. Commissioner and members of Her Majesty Constabulary there are Statutory Laws and apply them where necessary.
I suggest that the legislature's repeal and ammend the Public Health Act and increase the penalties.
Mr. Talk show host come of the law enforcement Officers and for God in heaven sake go sit down.

The whole fact is, it doesn't matter if the smuggler from HERE or ELSEWHERE, it's wrong PERIODT! I'm not putting my hand in the fire for anyone, even if a local was to smuggle in another local, IT'S WRONG! Stop being an instigator, and give your societal support, where needed. When that Frett guy got caught they should have jumped on this whole smuggling thing and nip it in the bud...but we wait for drastic, negative impacts to act. My poor BVI.

Again, SK feels the need to deflect blame onto a) the white outsider who many say is doing a good job in difficult circumstances, much like the Gov who gets attacked for anything he does that challenges local politicians, even morally disgusting behaviour; b) the expats who are being smuggled and earning a dollar from a demand among the population here; c) letting off the hook the big man and woman who operate the boat running business for drugs, guns and humans, who people like SK know personally, and the youth, getting the huge cash to work for them - all because they are BVIslanders and in SK world it does not do to blame us locals for a damn thing, even if it is against all the tenets of the Bible. The man is a scamp.

I found the statement by Claude Skelton Cline to be sarcastic when he said that he will hold the feet of the commissioner of police to the proverbial fire if the territory's borders is not secure, to prevent human smuggling. First of all I think the police commissioner and the entire police force are doing an excellent job to protect the lives and property in the territory. What Mr. Cline did not do is to encourage the local population to cooperate with the police and bring an end to the illegal trafficking of people.

If one should recall when the commissioner and his team went to arrest Bishop John Cline at Cane Garden Bay Baptiste church for breaking the curfew , there was an uproar against the commissioner. However, at this point in time Claude Cline is calling on the same commissioner to make bread out of stone. We must be consistent with what we say and do. What is good for Peter must be good for Paul. I am hoping that the entire task force will act swiftly and arrest the perpetrators. I know some will be surprised when the culprits are caught. This COVID-19 will not be controlled unless ALL the residents and visitors act responsibly.

When we all sleeping peacefully in our homes, we do not thank the police. When we can traverse through the island without having to duck shots and run for cover daily like some caribbean countries, we do not thank the police. Every country has some sort of illegal activity. But, considering the size and population of the BVI I can safely say the Police and other law enforcement bodies are doing a darm good job. Some of us know our cousins and friends or associate of a friend or family member is into wrong and do not say sh#t. But we blame the police or other enforcement bodies. Darm BVI mentality. And yes, I born right here.

There is certainly more to law enforcement that tasing people or beating on people because they do not give their name: be honest with yourself go road town now; that capital of our territory and count the number of police on patrol. Be honest to you and tell us about any recent update related to unsolved crime here. big old police vessels always dock up at road reef no coastal patrols so the smugglers run things(talk that) majority of police are documented workers therefore have no social interest in BVI, come here for financial reasons: be honest to yourself how often are police patrolling your village so the criminals have taken over

The government gave the police a boat with 3 brand new mercury engines to help stop the smuggling. They run the boat aground and damage the engines. The marine officers need training .They ran over a reef and wrote a report saying the wind blew the boat on the reef. If the operator had local knowledge of the area then this would not happen.

Yes I am a boat captain trained in boat accidents. I am not close to any investigation. I am a civilian. Yes many do get into accidents but if you are traveling in an area that has reef the best thing to do is to proceed with caution . If the operator was in slow mode then the foot of the boat would not get damage. Those 400 mercury has power to prevent you from been blown on a reef.
On another matter the marine base needs a good clean up.
Leadership matters in that since 2017 the hurricanes came and yes you waiting on RDA to clean. RDA will built a new building but at least PWD with their equipment could move the old cars and boats. I don't know how the officers work in that environment.
The media needs to investigate. Procurement unit should be call in to sell old items.
