Labour Management System a ‘OneStop Shop’ for Labour in VI- Hon Smith

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Calling it a landmark moment for the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and for the entire [British] Virgin Islands, Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade, Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL) officially launched the New Labour Management System last week.

The system, which was rolled out on June 25, 2024, is being billed as an innovative platform designed to streamline and automate many of the department's core functions and make it easier for employers to find the right talent, for job seekers to find the right opportunities and for the government to manage the territories workforce effectively.

“For employers, the Labour Management System offers a user-friendly portal to register your business, post job vacancies. Manage work permit applications, and identify the most suitable candidates from our pool of qualified job seekers.

“For job seekers, the Labour Management System provides a centralised platform to search for jobs, upload your resume, apply for jobs, and receive and accept interview requests. This is your one-stop shop for career development in the British Virgin Islands,” Hon Smith said.

She added that the Labour Management System is more than just a job board or a work permit processing system, rather it is a comprehensive tool that will transform how  labour is managed in the [British] Virgin Islands.

“The system includes modules for health and safety, labour relations and workforce development, all aimed at ensuring a fair, safe and productive work environment for everyone," Hon Smith added.

The Minister said in the future, the Labour Management System will provide valuable insights into labour market trends, allowing persons to make informed decisions about workforce needs.

“The launch of the Labour Management System is a major step forward in our ongoing efforts to modernise labour administration in the BVI. We are committed to creating a business environment that is conducive to growth and investment and the labour market that is inclusive and equitable.”

The Minister gave assurances that the system is just the beginning. “We will continue to enhance and expand the Labour Management System to meet the evolving needs of our workforce and our economy.”

Hon Smith encourages all employers and job seekers to explore the Labour Management System and to take advantage of its many features in an effort to build a stronger, more resilient workforce in the Virgin Islands.

    Every government office has its own one-stop-shop. Subsequently, working with the government actually involves many stops at many shops. It's 2024. Get it together. It's becoming increasingly beneficial to do business elsewhere.
