SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Third District Candidate Mr Kevin C. Smith aka 'OJ' has pledged to restore the property value of homes and businesses as well as clean up the surroundings of the Third District once elected.

During his well-received official campaign launch at Sea Cows Bay on March 29, 2023, Smith said several issues plaguing the Third District have resulted in the devaluation of the community.

“Our pristine environment is being devalued and this District has become a place where discarded vehicles have become commonplace…boats have been left to rot in our harbour. This latest edition in recent years has been added to the list of pollutions in the bay,”’ Smith highlighted.

Mr Smith, who is credited with transforming BVI Post during his tenure as Post Master, recalled years ago when the Third District communities were thriving with the spirit of entrepreneurship, as he noted that over the years an over-reliance on government has dimmed the flame of innovation, which he said must be reignited.

The former Director of the Trade and Consumer Affairs Department said the territory must do better and, given the rate of decline, the District will not be a desirable place to live if the issues are not resolved.

Removal of derelict vehicles & boats

Mr Smith said his first priority is to create a sustainable environment.

“And just because someone has not been able to get it done does not mean it can’t be done…

“The second thing that we need to do is to work with the property owners and business to remove those derelict vehicles,” he said as he noted that he has already had preliminary conversations with government officials and one of the businesses involved.

“In speaking with households in Pockwood Pond, I understand and share their concern over the appearance of their community and the risk to their health and livelihood. We cannot build a strong local economy if unsightly vehicles and trash continue to decrease our property values,” Smith said.

The Advisor to the Premier, who has also worked as the CEO of Digicel, added that he is not certain that many people understand how the surroundings of their homes may impact either positively or negatively on their property value.

“And it behooves us and those of us who seek to represent you to make sure that we’re doing everything possible to protect the value of your homes, the value of your life, the integrity of your health,” Smith noted.

He further shared his belief that a strong economy begins with the number one asset under your control, which is your house and land.

According to Smith, in order to ensure families are economically strong, their property value must be safeguarded.

He said this also allows them to receive cash from banks in cases of emergency.

'I will get that [Pockwood Pond] situation fixed'

Smith said the open burning issue at the Pockwood Pond landfill is one of his priorities and he will fight to resolve it if elected.

“It is not only diminishing the value of your property but it is risking the health of so many persons living in the surrounding areas…One way or the other I will get that situation fixed or God help anybody who stands in my way whether it be a member of the House of Assembly or somebody in government…” he assured.

Additionally, the District Candidate pointed to the need to restore historical sites, repair road systems and develop a platform to support businesses.

He said some road systems in the community are unsafe and he has campaigned on most of these issues since 2011 yet they remain unaddressed.

Many who endorsed Mr Smith, including his mother, described him as highly intelligent, results-driven, a natural leader, a family person, and someone who cares for others. Many in attendance agreed with what was said about Mr Smith's character.

The Post Office has been run almost as badly as Water & Sewage. Not sure that being in charge of other dept is something I would want to stress if I was standing in an election.

Just like Myron, Fraser may soon be arrested for the water plant issue of questionable actions, so no need to vote for him.

Did he advise the head coach to accept money under the table, unknowingly to the public and jeopardize the entire BVI'S welfare?
I highly doubt. Head coach was operating based on personal gain. Prior to appointing OJ to that position based on the news, "head coach had already received some funds. So don't sit there and type foolishness.
AF is a grown man. OJ is a good person. Always willing to help.

I support NDP but for the district I am voting for OJ. Our NDP candidate needs to mature more, and Fraser is too arrogant, and we need fresh blood with fresh ideas.

If Fraser is against you in the district, then you are as good as dead. Also, if he feels you are against him then you are still as good as dead. Kevin OJ Smith and VIP ALL THE WAY!!!

NDP switched sides to VIP. Go for the bag OJ. Was he bought out? New strategy to win, payoff or buy or t your political opponents. But who is to say they don’t get you from the inside.

Fraser is the man with the steady hand of sound leadership and a fighter for the people.

On the other hand OJ was rejected under NDP and we must reject him even as a VIP. I can sleep at night knowing Fraser is in the watch! Vote Fraser for a better future.

The current District 3 representative has been in Government and was a Minister in the Government and was Deputy Premier. All these positions over the past 20 years and there is nothing substantial he has done. Now, he seems to like being in the Opposition where he gets to do more of nothing and just complain and criticize. The man is tired and we in the district are tired of his games. Kevin Smith deserves a chance, and this is his time.

So you want to blame VIP who is in government only for the past 4 years and had to deal with all the damages from Irma left not fixed by NDP and on top of that had to unexpectedly deal with the worse pandemic in the last 100yrs (COVID). You have to be a criminal!!!

I agree that Kevin is intelligent and results driven; however, we still need and want to hear a plan, a strategy, something. How your are going to do what you say you are going to do. And what we are seeking is REPRESENTATION, we are all leaders in our own right. Once elected to represent us, they start making decisions without consulting US. We have to change that narrative forever.

Frazer should do like Dr.Lico did in 2019 . He stepped aside which allowed the younger, aspiring Dr.Nataljo to capture the seat. Frazer always refer to himself as Frazer, RA. That designation means Registered Architect, allowed to practice in the US. Frazer captained the Vip in 2015 and lost miserably. Perhaps it's time that Term Limits.be implemented. 20 years in government is more than enough time to make any district the place others bwould give anything to love in that district.Xistrict was the first district that got the attention of the new Vip go ernment when the remediated the steep hill just before the corner heading to Nanny Cay.
I did business in the be third about 25 years ago and except for the horse track that got an upgrade some ten to 15 years ag.nothimg has changed. though the district has so much potential. I can imagine OJ Smith after his upset of the old guard, springing into action like a kid in a Candy store. So many things to fix or organize. Especially to the younger folks choosing your new representative is not Rocket Science. It'sike night and day. RT O'Neal didn't must have regretted not passing the Batoon much sooner and taking a few cruises or trips to the Middle East a d elsewhere

The delayed political campaign which in earnest should have started months ago is heating up and will get hotter as the April 24 Election Day approaches. However, as candidates launch their campaigns and partake in interviews, I observed a couple of trends 1) generalities of proposed actions, and )I will fix this or that mantra. Candidates should be detailing plans, including how they will be funded , for the projects they intend to work with the HoA and government to make happen. Generalities sound good but needs plans. Voters need to know what projects a candidate will work to bring to fruition if elected. Secondly, there are very few things/projects an individual candidate can get accomplish by their lonesome. The I alone mantra of I will fix this or that is an empty promise. In getting things done in a district or in an area require working closely with colleagues in the HoA and government. The I alone can fix this or that is not a good strategy. It sounds good and strong on the trail but as a practical approach it is weak. Government pulls the strings on what gets done. What projects gets done is a competitive process with limited budgetary resources so a representative must work closely with government in this high energy competitive process. The reality is to the Victor go the spoils and the party system runs things. The process may not always be fair but it is real.

A gaggle of empty suits and skirts with their flowery language who are not spouting anything specific. Telling me you going to fix healthcare system without telling the financing, timeline, etc does not mean a damn ting. It is just campaign noise. Don’t tell me nada about your business experience, for this is running government. Similarly, I don’t want hear about your education and I want to hear how you are going my family and my life better. If you cannot do that don’t even bother me.

If someone could deal with the sewage outfall problem (the pipes were never put together properly to send the sewage farther out into the channel, instead it runs straight into Sea Cows Bay!) and also the Irma boat wreckage within Sea Cows Bay, they’d have my vote.
Sea Cow Bay, as it stands now, is a cess pool. And it’s a shame.
