ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Two additional Independent candidates, both females, have entered the 2023 political race in the Virgin Islands, each vying to take up a seat in the House of Assembly (HoA) as legislators but representatives in a different capacity.

Already in campaign mode, Karen C. Vanterpool and Rosita Scatliffe-Thompson are vying for At Large and District 4 seats respectively.

Ms Vanterpool, speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), said her bid was about seven years in the making, since attending university, and that through prayers and guidance from God, she felt now is the right time to come forward and serve the country in elected office.

She added that she is well known for being Miss Gorgeous 1986 in Virgin Gorda and disclosed to our news centre that she already has great support from the Virgin Gorda community as well as from a large family and community members and is looking to do the best she can for the VI.

Ms Vanterool has a BsC in Business Management, Associate [Degree] in Business Administration, Associate in Accounting, and an Associate in Construction Technology with some 28 plus years of experience in the telecommunications industry going all the way back to Cable and Wireless.

No fear to run- Ms Vanterpool

She is also a Member of the BVI Cancer Society and is a Virgin Islander by birth and plans to go all in representing the Virgin Islands.

“I am not fearful at all, our country needs new leadership and that’s the bottom line… we are just on a trajectory that’s going straight down,” she said, while adding that the UK could already be waiting to see the results.

“If I don’t do it at this time, then when? Our country needs and is crying out for leadership… I worked as a civil servant, so I know what I am talking about,” she said.

Ms Vanterpool said should she be elected she will look out for the underdogs in the VI, such as the youth, the elderly, and widows to offer financial support and more.

Scaatlifee-Thompson could not be reached for comments up to publications time; however, she plans to campaign on ‘integrity over influence’ and, according to a campaign poster, is committed, innovative, resilient, attentive and hardworking.

The House of Assembly (HoA) has already been dissolved; however, a date for elections has not yet been called.

I am starting to wonder if all these women now coming to the front line and running for election is on account of what Mr C.S. Cline has said about a woman becoming our next premier. Any who, this time around I will not be voting party line but for individuals who I believe can take the country forward. This party system has failed us big time.

Anyone voting for a party does not have the best interests of the BVI at heart. We need to select the best individuals from all the available candidates.

I am really encouraged by the number of women stepping forward, particularly as independent candidates. I am encouraged by independent candidates in general. The thinking that got us to this point will not help us to move on. We need to move beyond selective adherence to the "imitation" westminister system which has stalled in delivering the quality and excellence of development we long to achieve. I applaud these women.

One of the most important thing missing from our political venture is the practice of integrity. Integrity is a practical that comes from the heart (mind) of people that love, care for, bear with, and share with their neighbors the blessings of life. Integrity has been missing, so far, from our dealing with our neighbors in every area. Hopefully these two females that is vying to get elected are women of integrity, if not, don't vote for them.
Hopefully all other that are, and will seek a seat in the HoA are at the integrity level needed to help make the BVI a more friendlier, and more prosperous BVI, Spiritually, socially, educationally, economically for hopefully all the citizens of this Country, and visitors, too.

Another great word is the word community.
Community means commission to ensure unity.
Are we a community minded people? Not yet., but it is achievable, with God, and co-operation with each other.

Note:. It is possible, but not without integrity-minded actions.

It is both important and critical that younger generations of Virgin Islanders are stepping forward and showing an interest in politics and how the territory is governed. Nevertheless, IMHO, the political system/political parties have not provided ample opportunity for the training of the next generations of Virgin Islanders to take the baton. Consequently, many bust on the political scene ill-prepared and under prepared for the complex function of governing effectively. Governing can look easy from the outside; it can be an illusion; ie, more challenging than it appears. Governing out of power is easy. The government in power must find the resources to a)deliver accessible and affordable healthcare, b)when school call in it must provide the facilities, teachers, and other staff to provide instruction, c) when students graduate they need jobs, d) pick up and safely dispose of thrash, e)fund police force, f) design, build and maintain roads, g)deliver reliable potable water supply, h) deliver wastewater services, i) provide power and telecommunications services, j) provide social services, etc. These are some of the services that voters demand and legislators are expected to deliver. Though new legislators may be learning on the job, the electorate expect them to deliver on the overpromises made during the campaign. We need to come up with opportunities for properly preparing the next generations of political leaders, ie, Village/District Councils, etc.

All these independents are nothing but election spoilers, they are not going to win, but the 25 -30 votes each one takes away from NDP or PVIM means its an easy part for VIP. I had VIP winning 5 seats, now with all these spoilers VIP may just end up with 7 or 8 seats
  • Undercover Observer (14/03/2023, 16:28) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
Running as an independent candidate is at best a long, long shot, a big gamble. True, a winning independent candidate can hold the trump card in a close election, becoming the king or queen maker in forming the government, leveraging their vote. It is a long shot. In any event, the party system is integral to Westminister style of government. Parties organize to win election, operate/run government, and influence public policies. In power, a party has the numbers to pass any piece of legislation with members having the advantage of being able to easily get assistance alloyed for their districts/areas. Opposition and independent members often get a disproportionate allotment of resources for their districts or areas. Running independent is flying solo with little influence, ie, having no wing man. It is a choice that comes with a huge cost for some constituents.

If they lose, you never hear them banging ang banging as voice for the people. Really wish we had another option. Look who we want to put out and look the replacement possibilities. None many I bet are comfortable with what the outcome can be. If some people get in office, their arrogance will be like fever. To be honest. Where were these two before now? Should have been hearing from them earlier than now so the people get to know them more. Not just wait until the dissolution of the House of Assembly and jump out here telling people you all running in the upcoming elections. Stop confusing the electorate man. It’s so wrong. Tell the people the truth. Which party are you secretly affiliated with.
Rosie I know was affiliated with the Lions Club years ago. Then she disappeared. Other than that? A lot of people don’t know them. If what the bloggers a saying are facts, it’s certainly not encouraging.
