GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI- Plans are underway to have a library on Jost van Dyke that would be assessable by both students and the community.

This is according to Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL), who made the disclosure at the opening ceremony of the new Jost van Dyke Primary School on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

The library will be housed at the school, considered a multi-purpose educational facility.

In addition to the educational facilities, we recognise the importance of a well–equipped library for any school and community. I am delighted to inform you that plans are underway to facilitate a library at this location.

A library is not only a repository of knowledge but also a space that fosters a love for reading and learning. It will serve as a valuable resource for both students and the wider community, promoting a culture of continuous learning and intellectual curiosity,” Hon de Castro said.

HLSCC satellite campus on JvD

The Education Minister has also said H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) is set to establish a satellite campus at the new school.

She said this means that residents of Jost van Dyke will soon have the opportunity to access higher education, specialised training, and certification without the need to travel far.

The only paper Jvd people needs is to roll, not to read. Just being honest

Good job on getting a public library on one of our smallest sister islands. However, what about the main island - no Public Library on Tortola in more than a decade!! Instead of the rhetoric about poor literacy during education week or reading is fun week. Come on, let's get serious about education. The country needs a National Public Library.

One that should be accessed ONLINE. This would put more funds into the books and less into infrastructure as in building rent and maintenance and lesser human capital costs. We could have a National ONLINE Public Library in this way FREE for all BVI Students of reading age, with a supplement for ADULT costs via membership. No?

When can we expect a library in Road Town, Tortola? Shameful that this is not a priority. Waiting about EIGHT years now and no plans to date. More than likely the books in storage, many of which document our Territory's history and are hard to find, are full of mildew and mold and will have to be discarded.

Our government should be able to do much better than this!

Why some of you always have the need to constantly complain or find things to complain about? The library will benefit everyone. There are people in the community that may visit the library to do research, download information, reading materials or perhaps rent a book. Lots of us still enjoy reading books.I’m feeling/loving it.

There needs to be a comprehensive plan for all these services (particularly library services) territory wide. It can’t be that when you are on JVD you speak about this, that and the other for JVD. And likewise for VG and Anegada. This disjointed approach will never work. Road Town first needs a modern, state-of-the-art library facility with the necessary satellite facilities strategically placed throughout the territory. Stop looking to score cheap and temporary points at these public events. This is becoming a bad habit with this Minister.
