JVD man allegedly enters court smelling of ‘weed’
Following his guilty plea in court on June 28, 2013, Kendrick Chinnery, 26, of Jost Van Dyke was ordered to the Sandy Lane Centre for drug treatment and counselling but missed several sessions for reasons unknown.
The defendant, a father of two children who reportedly reside in the US Virgin Islands, pleaded not guilty to possession of 6 grams of cocaine that Police alleged he had in his possession at the time of his arrest on May 12, 2012 at White Bay, Jost Van Dyke.
Chinnery, who is being represented by attorney, Marie Lou Creque, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of 1.2g of cannabis; using a motor vehicle (scooter) when not covered by insurance in relation to a third party risk, driving without a driver’s licence and driving an unlicensed vehicle.
When Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards enquired about a reason for his absence at the Centre, the defendant appeared at a loss for words but eventually muttered that work prevented him from attending a few weeks ago and subsequent sessions slipped his mind.
“What is the name of your counsellor?” Magistrate Richards enquired of Chinnery. Chinnery started scratching his head before the Magistrate assisted with an answer which he eventually confirmed as correct.
The Magistrate then enquired when Chinnery had last used marijuana and a court officer interjected to say, “This morning! I smelled it on him.”
“Maybe that’s why things are slipping you,” the Magistrate told Chinnery, “you and I know the ferry isn’t a problem.”
He was instructed to ensure that he resumes sessions with the Sandy Lane Centre and asked to return to court on November 22, 2013. He remains on $35,000 signed bail with one surety.
