GREAT HARBOR, Jost van Dyke, VI- It was sometime in September 2023, that the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) discovered that their undersea cable connection that comes from the Pockwood Pond area of Tortola to Jost van Dyke had been damaged.

For the past four months, the situation has caused havoc in terms of the power supply on Jost van Dyke (JvD) with the BVIEC having to resort to a standby generator to keep the power supply going on the island.

Will lights stay on during old year's night celebrations?

Reports are that to keep the generator stocked with thousands of gallons of diesel, it has cost the BVIEC thousands of dollars and this has been a financial challenge.

In addition, almost weekly the generator malfunctions putting the entire island out of power and this has happened, as recently as today Saturday, December 30, 2023.

However, the good news is, that it’s our understanding that the part for the cable has arrived on the island and the repair work is expected to start shortly, however, BVIEC General Manager Dr Niel M. Smith could not be immediately reached for comments.

With hundreds of revelers set to arrive on JvD for the annual old year’s celebrations and to ring in the new year, it is the hope that the generator will hold and keep the lights on until the cable can be repaired.

Who cares if 130 people dont got lights. If they use all that drug money they earn over there for infrastructure then they can build a nuclear power plant there lol.

You are required by law to be tied into the grid therefore they should be required by law provide stable and consistent power and have repairs done in a time manner...

Not just Jost Van Dyke, all the other small islands. The govt. behaves as if Tortola exists, they can’t get the essentials, but wasting tax payers $ doing crap. BVI govt. is not right.
