Juniors edge into Mix with win over Hi Speed

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Junior Mega Mix clinched one of the last remaining Play Off berths in the BVI Basketball Federation’s Summer League with a 35-24 win over Hi Speed as the regular season closed out over the weekend of the July 7/8, 2012.

The path turned out to be fairly straight forward despite a close first half which saw the Mix up by just two, but then they turned on to control the second half to comfortably win by the 11-point margin. J’Moi Liburd top scored with 12 points, Tyler Cameron picked up 12 rebounds and D’Moi Hodge, 9 points for the Mix. For Hi Speed, Jachoy Walwyn scored 8 points and Deondre Smith, 6.

The Hawks then beat the Jnr. Pure Playaz 88-31 before Another Level secured an 87-60 victory over And One. Terrique Wattley scored 15 points and both Stefon Richardson and J’Kwon Frett, 13 each for Another Level.

On Saturday July 7, the ESHS Rams recorded their first win of the season and condemned the Playaz to ignominy of 8 straight losses in the 64-56 victory, led by Kevon Lettsome’s 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Jnr. Mystics beat Young Starz 94-82 in the conclusion to their season with Paul Bridgwater scoring 29 points. William Penn Jnr. added 23 and Shamarr Georges ended his night’s work with 20 points and 29 rebounds. Jolyon Wilson led the Starz with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pure Playaz consolidated their place in the top 6 of the senior league with a 102-90 against All Ah Wee with Deon Smith scoring 32 points, 11 rebounds, 7 steals and 4 assists. He received great support from Bodean Sammuel’s 26 points and 19 rebounds. Azim Beazer led the line for All Ah Wee with 26 points and 16 rebounds along with Dominic Ward who scored 20 points and picked up 10 rebounds.

Legs then laid down a marker for the Play Offs and perhaps the Championship with a resounding 124-111 win over Mega Mix to finish unbeaten atop the standings.

Jasin Edwin top scored with 34 points, 15 rebounds and 9 assists. Randy George added 24 points, Khalid Gerrard, 19 points and Kitwana Rhymer, 18 points and 10 rebounds for Legs who leapt into an early lead and kept it right through to the buzzer. Shamal Caines led the Mix with 33 points, Halstead Chiverton and Douron Phillip 18, whilst Kelvin Sammuel finished with 16.

The final game of group play took place on Sunday and featured the VG Heats beating the Bulls 50-36. Aldric Thomas finished with 15 points for the Heats who also recorded a perfect season with the win. Jamoi Dore notched 10 points with 5 rebounds and Thomas picked up 4. For the Bulls, who dropped down to second place, Tahj Malone scored 12 points with 8 rebounds and Halford Barzey 8 points.

In announcing the Play Off schedule BVI BF President, Byron Hodge said how pleased he was with the League so far and offered his congratulations to the successful teams as well as words of encouragement to those who didn’t make it. “First of all I would like to say congratulations to the teams that advanced to the playoffs. I would like you guys to continue the hard work and I would also like to encourage the teams that were not as successful to work harder for next year.”

The Play Offs starts tonight Wednesday July 11 at the Multi Purpose Gym and with a tight schedule that may well see some teams playing back to back as the Federation is trying to complete as many games as possible ahead of the Miss BVI Pageant. Games would then resume on August 10 in hopes of completing the league by August 18.
