DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- At a ceremony attended by a number of dignitaries, including Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) and Deputy Governor David D. Archer Jr, Jovan E.L. Cline was installed as the Senior Pastor of the New Life Baptist Church (NLBC) in Duff’s Bottom, Tortola on Sunday, January 29, 2023.

Mr Cline, a former school teacher and businessman, replaced his father Bishop John I. Cline, who served nearly 30 years as the senior pastor of NLBC.

‘I must decrease…’- Bishop Cline

It was during the 2022 Power Plus Conference at NLBC on Sunday, October 9, 2022, that Bishop Cline had stated he was stepping down as Senior Pastor and that his son Jovan would be elevated to the position.

“He will take over the reign in 2023. I must decrease so that he must increase. This is my third born child,” Mr Cline had stated as he introduced his son and choir member, Jovan, to the congregation.

‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart’

Bishop Cline on Sunday encouraged his son to hold Proverbs 3:5-6 close to his heart as he leads the church. Proverbs 3:5-6 reads: ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths’.

The first ‘Act’ of the new pastor was the serving of the communion to his fellow pastors, after first being given communion by Bishop Cline.

He was also presented with church manuals and a symbolic bunch of keys to the church.

Taking to the podium as the newly minted Senior Pastor, Jovan broke out into singing ‘How Great is our God’.

Among other things, he said he once told himself he would never be a pastor and that “people who wanted to be pastors are crazy.”

Nevertheless, he said it was a lot getting to where he has come and he is happy.

He shared that he loves the New Life Baptitst Church and is also prepared to love those who will not “stick around. I don’t need you here for God to reach you, because I wasn’t here when God got me,” he said, admitting that he didn’t grow up in church but “around church”.

“I Look forward to going forward,” Jovan stated.

Among those giving well wishes was Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and ordained minister Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2), who brought greetings from the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church.

Hon Turnbull also remined that his brother Dr Michael A. Turnbull will also soon take over from their father Melvin A. Turnbull as Senior Pastor of the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church.

      The church has a board that has to approve the hiring of anyone that works for the church, so there was a process that took place in the background the people don't know about.

      None of us is perfect so, all i will say is congrats to him. The way some of the same church members were bashing him and saying he is not fit for the position and where his wife is from etc....I would be ashamed to preach to such a hateful bunch....YIKES!!!

    I am so confused by this especially in this 2023. Can anyone enlighten me as to why the government had to find themselves on stage taking photos with the young man? These persons that were elected to run the country for whatever crazy reason people had in their minds at the time, act as if they are celebrities, @&^%$ annoying!

    I am always proud of young people when they show maturity. I don't know the young man very well but can see the seriousness in him. Having said that though not sure how I feel about a youth leading a flock as big as that. What advice can he give to a couple who is having marital problems? Where is the experience? How will he deal with a senior pastor who is guilty if an infringement? Will he get that respect? Glad he is not my pastor!

    As Moses neared the end of his tenure as the leader of Isreal, he asked God for a man who will continue to lead his people into Canaan the promised land. This was very surprising. Why did not not Moses suggest his friend and personal and trusted Minister Joshau, who stood by his side for year's? Because Moses knew that the Job that he was about to vacate was not his personal business but was the Lord's and God alone has the power "to take down or promote anyone in his vineyard" God responded by suggesting that Joshua become the next leader of Israel, his qualification? (Joshau's) was that in him was the spirit. I gave the Senior Pastor credit for promoting transitional leadership but did he pray about the matter is was the transition made because the younger Pastor was his son,? Is he trying to promote a dynasty? Too many people are becoming Bishops, Pastors, Minister etc, solely because they could go to school and use their own understanding and intelligence to acquire a degree or whatever, then present themselves as leaders without being called by God to the Ministry or has the spirit which is the seal of God's approval for those who are the chosen for the crucial role ahead of them. I congratulate the young Pastor but if this is a gift from his father and not a call from God, not only will his Ministry fail, but he too will treat it as an inheritance hand it over to his son/daughter when his time comes to an end.
