Joshua Samuel Lawrence to receive literacy award in October
Joshua is the son of Einstein Samuel and James Lawrence. Through early intervention, his determination and that of his mother, the teaching and care of other specialised individuals and programmes, he has risen above his early challenges to the point where he is today. At age 14, he is now a Grade 9 student, attending classes at an accredited school in Florida, via the internet.
Joshua will receive his award at a ceremony scheduled to take place during Reading-Is-Fun-Week in October. The board of directors of the BVI Reading Council extends sincerest congratulations to Joshua, his entire family and all who contributed to his success.
In 2002 the BVI Reading Council Literacy Award was instituted for students who have succeeded in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. This award is given as part of our annual observance of International Literacy Day. Since the inception, there has been a total of six recipients of the award.
The BVI Reading Council exerts all teachers, parents and students to continue to celebrate literacy this month through educational activities and recreational reading. International Literacy Day, which focuses attention on worldwide literacy needs, was observed on September 8. In order to increase participation from parents, schools, libraries, organisations, and corporations, IRA will continue the celebration throughout the month of September. This year, IRA has adopted the theme "Invent Your Future." The objective is to help shine a light on the crucial literacy skills that prime students for success in school, work, and life.
The BVI Reading Council is dedicated to fostering the love of reading in the Territory.
