JoAnn ‘Roxie’ Romney expected to run for office!
Ms JoAnn ‘Roxie’ Romney, a businesswomen and indigenous Virgin Islander, is expected to be one of 13 candidates in the line-up on the VIP ticket expected to be made public on the night of Wednesday, May 6, 2015 after the governing body of the VIP, the Congress, holds a meeting and elections to ratify its candidates.
However, the party seems to be tight-lipped as to whether Ms Romney, who was very close to her father and worked on his many political campaigns, will be an At-Large candidate or run in a district.
Neither Ms Romney nor the VIP President, Carvin Malone, could be reached as of press time.
It is believed the VIP is expected to release an impressive list of candidates to take on the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).
Roxie’s dad, Cyril B. Romney
Cyril B. Romney, a son of West End on the main island of Tortola, was born on March 1, 1931 and died in a Miami hospital on July 19, 2007.
Mr Romney served as Chief Minister of the Virgin Islands from 1983 to 1986. He also served as a member of the then Legislative Council from 1979 to 1995, some 16 years representing the Fifth District. He was the first Virgin Islander to hold the post of Financial Secretary, and was also a business leader in the Territory and the region.
Former Chief Minister Romney is credited with being the leader of the cruise industry, as well as the financial service industry, both sectors that have helped to take the tiny overseas territory to prosperity.
Roxie will join two other possible candidates with direct links to late Chief Ministers. Preston P. Stoutt, the son of the late Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt, has announced he will run as an Independent candidate in the First District and Natalio D. ‘Sowande Uhuru’ Wheatley is expected to be a candidate under the People’s Empowerment Party banner. He is the grandson of the late Chief Minister, Willard Wheatley.
Snap elections: Who were caught with pants down?
Since last year, Leader of the Opposition and former VIP Chairman Hon Ralph T. O’Neal OBE warned his VIP supporters and the country of snap elections and three months ago the VIP announced that the elections will be on July 6, 2015. With the House of Assembly now dissolved, the VIP is prepared to go to the polls as early as May 25, 2015 according to a party spokeswoman.
Party boss and Premier in waiting Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) told our news site in an exclusive interview last week that his 43-year-old party is ready for elections.
The word on the street is that the NDP was not prepared to go to the polls so early and they themselves may have been caught with their pants down. This news site is investigating the reasons behind the election being brought up from the predicted July 6, 2015 date announced by the VIP.
