'Jealous guard' paid prisoner to attack me @ HMP - Boxer Julan O. Brown
"One of the guards actually paid a prisoner to hit me in my face with a stone," Mr Brown told Honestly Speaking moderator, Claude O. Skelton-Cline on the Thursday, May 7, 2020 edition of the show on ZBVI 780 AM.
"Because when I did my investigation and I talk to the same prisoner, I said tell me, I mean I treat you so good, what devil could have go inna you to really hit me in my face with a stone?"
According to the boxer, the prisoner replied, "Brown, let me tell you... I never want to do it you know, but I needed the money."
Guards got jealous of his ambitions
He said one of the reasons the local guards were jealous of him was because he was ambitious, and was rising in ranks at the prison. "I'm doing the [boxing] programme and I'm at the prison, you have officers start getting a bit jealous"
Brown further alleged that officers would say openly, "This boy not from here, how he getting money from here? How he doing this? Some of them are still at a level one stage and I just come and it's like I'm rising," the boxer and mentor noted.
He said the attack was a bloodbath with blood gushing from the temple area of his forehead and further alleged that authorities at the prisons even wanted him to pay his own hospital bills.
"They end up paying because I start making noise... I said no.
"I actually drove myself to the hospital because, you know, the prison short-staffed and all of that," he said.
'No investigation to my knowledge' - Brown
Brown said ahead of the attack, he actually received advance warning from another prisoner that he should be aware of the prisoner who attacked him; however, he did not take the warning seriously.
"What I did not know [about] some of those prisoners [is that] I trained their sons outside and I didn't know they have fathers inside the prison, that's how I got respect from some of these guys," he said.
Mr Brown said he couldn't remember exactly what year the incident occurred but it was when the Superintendent of Prison was Mr David E. Foot.
He also told Mr Skelton-Cline he never followed up on the incident or knew if a report was written since he was fearful of losing his job and getting deported.
"It was more like fear because you know you need a job, you leave everything back home and a lot of people going through the same thing. Being used in ways like that, you get injured on the job and before they actually help you out, they actually trying to get you out the country."

Some years ago on my way to Tortola after receiving a job offer I decided to visit the island before I accept the position. A friend of mine saw me at the airport and enquire as to where I was off to. When I mentioned Tortola he smile and said have you ever been there before. I answered in the negative. He proceeded first to tell me that they have the ugliest women in the world. Having visited Papua new Guinea I said to myself very unlikely. On my arrival I said huh ok this guy probably never left the airport he base his assumption on what he saw at the airport. Then I had some issues at the airport with you know who immigration. I wondered what precious possessions are these folks hiding from the outside world.
On my way then to my hotel I quickly realised what they were hiding. On reaching east end I saw it in living color it wasnt anything precious it was what I saw on the road way. Sewage running the length and breath of the island hmmm.
To my surprise on my visit to road town and the years I spent there I was so anxious to see my friend again and let him know that he was as accurate as the algebraic equations in algebra. Then I look at the educational system . I shook my head.hmm. you have heads of departments at your high school. Young girls with an associate degree interesting. No wonder all the top positions in the private sector are loaded with expats
No wonder the government is loaded with locals hence it is so dysfunctional.
