Firstly, the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League announced that basketball star Jason A. Edwin has agreed to coordinate the Junior Division portion of the League.

The Junior Division is opened to players both male and female, ages 9-13. Mr Edwin’s duties are specific to the Junior Division of the League only.

Speaking to this news site yesterday May 10, 2015, Commissioner of the League Rajah A. Smith expressed his happiness about the decision to use Edwin in the role.

“First and foremost I think Jason Edwin is a great guy who has been playing on the collegiate level and on the international level and I think that in time these guys that have this level of experience should come back and assist in how we could grow the game of basketball in our territory,” he said.

Smith believes that even though no one from the Virgin Islands has yet made it to the National Basketball Association (NBA) of the United States of America, he still believes that experienced players with overseas exposure can be an integral part of achieving this goal and he thinks that the best place for this to start is at the youth level.

“If we are to teach our future leaders we must start at a young age and I think Jason Edwin is the best person for this task,” he said.

In a comment on his new role, Edwin told Virgin Islands News Online that it was a role that he was looking forward to. “It is important to give the youths the fundamentals so that they could develop and become good players and go far through sports, teach them discipline so that they could become good citizens of the country,” he said.

Edwin noted that the aim is to give the youth the same platform as those in the intermediate level and as such he is hoping that the fans would come out to support them.

In addition, the League has adopted its new official logo which will be used as the branding of the League and on all official documents associated with the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League.
The League will make an announcement as to the unveiling.

Registration continues until July 1, 2015

The public is reminded that registration for both the Senior and Junior Divisions continue until July 1, 2015. Both Divisions are opened to male and females.

Teams can obtain rosters by calling the League Commissioner, Rajah A. Smith, at 340-1546 or Assistant Commissioner Byron J. Hodge at 542-8300 for roster applications. The fee is $200.00 which includes uniform tops and insurance.

Before the 2015 season starts, the League will also meet with team owners, managers, captains, coaches and referees to confirm rules and the League by-laws.

The Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League was founded in 2013 by Hon Julian Fraser RA, Third District Representative and Bishop John I. Cline, founder of the Save the Seed Energy Centre.
