ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- She is usually not very confrontational but Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie B. de Castro (AL) had enough of the “nonsense” on display by some Members of the Opposition during the continuation of the 17th Sitting of the 1st Session of the 5th House of Assembly (HoA) on Friday, August 16, 2024.

“It's disappointing when we get an opportunity to make a difference and instead of making a difference we align with the political nonsense,” Hon de Castro stated in response to criticism of the Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Premier Wheatley in presenting Supplementary Estimates before the HoA revealed that upon review of the compensation for public officers by the Ministry of Finance in April 2024, that twenty-five million, fifty-six thousand, five hundred and eighteen dollars was needed and not 11.7 million dollars.

‘We have to stop it’- Hon de Castro

Smelling blood in the water, the Opposition launched an attack on Premier Wheatley and the controversial Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) went as far as calling on the Premier to resign as Finance Minister.

The Members of the Opposition, Premier Wheatley said, “very well know” that the compensation review was led by the Deputy Governor’s Office and they presented the figures on advice from Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC).

“We have a responsibility as Members of this House to be honest and forthright in our deliberations and discussions in and out of the House,” Hon de Castro stated.

Hon de Castro said she enjoys the Committee Stage as it is very productive and both the government and Opposition work together to address issues with bills.

“And that is why I want the public to see that part of it.”

“But you see when the camera comes on and the radio comes on? That’s the part of it that I don’t like, because it is like as if we have multiple personalities or something, and you start to see a whole bunch of madness that is not representative of the figures or the words on the paper and I think because we know that sometimes our people will not read and because they may not have the insight, we use the opportunity to sabotage the process for our individual political benefit and we have to stop it.”

‘Set a good example’- Hon de Castro tells fellow legislators

Hon de Castro added that the behaviour by some legislators can discourage young aspiring legislators from seeking to enter the HoA.

“And it's disappointing when we get an opportunity to make a difference and instead of making a difference we align with the political nonsense and we refuse to sit down as colleagues [to] have the meetings that we need to have to move forward our education sector, our youth development sector, our sports sector, our work sector, health sector, our financial services sector.”

“We're not willing to do that but we're willing to come in here and talk nonsense publicly. We got to do better,” Hon de Castro stated.

Hon de Castro also stated that she “unequivocally” stands by her leader, Premier Wheatley.

    Looking glass they forget to stop pelting stones at each other as though they don't have glass doors many times i'm in shock to hear and view the behavior of some of our representatives. No wonder why our territory is in a mess. No kind of example and respect. Please do better at the helm of guiding this territory into a better place and not a bitter place. Peace

    Walwyn is an ultra-aggressive individual who uses any opportunity for political advancement. He seemingly doesn't worry about the bigger picture other than what he can gain politically. This will give him headlines and some attention, and even some support from the always anti-VIP or government crowd. That sort of politics doesn't seem to work in the long term from what I can tell. We'll have to see what the future holds for him. But he should be careful as bullies usually don't recover well after getting punched in the mouth. He threatened to 'mash up' Wheatley so this is what we can expect. However, Wheatley is also a good talker when he takes the time to speak to the people, so jab for jab is what we will most likely see. Personally, I am sick of the 'entertainment debating' nonsense and want to see some results from both Government and Opposition. I think this error could've happened to both party governments if what I think about the details that I heard are true.

    ... what is disappointing is that the Hon Member is silent save when the HoA sits, and seems to spend inordinate amounts of time out of the Territory. Why was she at the Olympics, and did she take her friend (the credit card one) with her?

    Regretfully, politics is personal, self-interest- driven, and a cesspool of deceit, vice, plots, deceit, treachery, betrayal, etc., of every imaginable kind. They are chameleons willing to adapt to every situation. Ok. Voters send members to the HoA to represent and save for national security issues, some personal and confidential information, HoA debates, discussions, etc., should be open open to the public. The Committee Stage, the sausage making stage,should be open to to the public. It is the people business.

    Let’s us take a look at the budget process, which is an estimate of revenues and expenses. Each ministry, department, division, office, Statutory bodies, Governor/Deputy Governor Office, etc submit budget estimates to the MoF for the upcoming fiscal year. The submitted estimates must be credible, reflecting confidence in the process. I will take a guess that every activity(s) under a Ministry must submit their budget estimate to the Minister before they are forwarded to tge MoF. If no, the system is flawed. Similarly, Deputy Governor submittals hopefully are reviewed by the Governor. Hear is a news flash. One can delegate a task to a subordinate but the responsibility and accountability for that tasks cannot be delegated away——Ultimate Responsibility. Was the submittal from the Governor’ s Office take at face value?? There are reports of a pending investigation into how such a large delta ocuured. Nevertheless, I doubt it will get off the ground. However, if it were an action taken by local government, a commission of inquiry would be commissioned. But Mount Olympus probably is not going to investigate itself? And even if does, tge outcome is clear ; it will be airbrushed.

      @Stealth, politics can be different from, “ politics is personal, self-interest- driven, and a cesspool of deceit, vice, plots, deceit, treachery, betrayal, etc., of every imaginable kind. They are chameleons willing to adapt to every situation.” Politics is the way it is because of us, the electorate. Politicians make politics a performance art form, grandstanding, a passport to greed and personal gain, etc., because the electorate disengage and let them. We are more about self-interest than public interest. This attitude give politicians license to take residence, a home, in the HOA, serving their own interests,i.e., status, influence, power, economic benefits , etc.. If we are dissatisfied and want change, change will not happen by wishing for it. We, the electorate must become a change agents.

    Jump high jump low Sheri is certainly doing a better job than both Myron and Natilio as minister of education

      She sure is doing a better or same as Natalio which is absolutely nothing, but she can't stand near nor by Myron. In fact, list all that she has done as minister apart from travelling and photo bombing pictures. She's a useless minister.

    I am not backing anyone, whether you like Myron or not he was only doing his job, these government ministers need to realize if you don't want to be put on blast they need to stop messing up, if they cannot come to teams that such a large variance in one item of the budget says something about them and the minister in charge of said ministry, when you are charge the buck stops with you. Don't blame anyone else or you should not be in the job.

    She needs to re-think before opening her darn trap from spewing crap. Like them or not, the Opposition is there to keep the Government on track. She is there looking to tell people what they can say and can't say. Who in tarnation let her out of her cage. Attention is needed towards the focus on our educational structures and missions. Why she not focusing on performance (under) in these areas. No accountability, just diarrhea of the mouth (like her Leader)

    This is simple maths.
    Politician = liar
    Politician = scamp
    Politician = corrupt
    Politician = self serving

    Therefore:
    Politician - liar - scamp - corrupt - self serving = 0
