FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI - Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley said with regards to Dr. Kedrick D. Pickering contesting District 7 once more, he said the former Deputy Premier has a democratic right to run for office again.

Dr Wheatley was a telephone guest on the Monday, April 11, 2022, edition of “Da Morning Braff” show hosted by Floyd Burnett aka 'Heritage'.

People will have to make a choice - Dr Wheatley

“I think it's anybody's democratic right to run, but of course, I think the people will have to ensure they put their thinking caps on and make a positive choice,” Dr Wheatley said in response to a question from Julio S. Henry.

“One of the things that you’re going to make a choice on is persons' records, so he will have to go and defend his record, and I’ll have to do the same. I have to do the same,” Dr Wheatley added.

Dr. Wheatley added that all parties will have to forward plans and the people will have the right to be able to make a decision for themselves.

NDP failed VI in a number of areas - Dr Wheatley

“In my view, and the reasons why I wanted to run for office, is that I do believe the National Democratic Party administration has failed in a number of areas,” he said.

“Democracy gives you choices, so it’s my right to be able to say I wasn’t pleased with the direction that they have taken us with… agriculture is one," Dr Wheatley added.

Although saddled with many portfolios, Dr Wheatley in his first term as an elected representative was able to, among other things, resurrect the Farmers and Fishers Week, provide a stimulus for farmers and fishers during the pandemic, and has been pushing for legislation to develop the sector.

For instance, the Virgin Islands Food Security and Sustainability Act, 2022, currently in the Committee Stage of the House of Assembly, will place renewed emphasis and importance on agriculture.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) first reported that Dr Pickering, who was defeated in the 2019 General Election, is back to contest the seat once more for the upcoming 2023 elections.

More D7 contestants?

It is expected that there will be about four persons in the 2023 race for the Seventh District seat, along with Dr Pickering and Dr Wheatley.

VINO previously reported that, according to sources in the NDP, former banker Kevon S. Lettsome is expected to be their candidate for D7. In addition, residents in the Seventh District have told our news centre that the Water and Sewerage Director Mrs Perline R. Scatliffe-Leonard is considering a run in D7.

“I think it's anybody's democratic right to run," except you have to be second generation BV Islander which dramatically reduces the number of potential candidates... which is why we have the same old cronies every election year.

Well why would we have someone show up from Zimbabwe live her for 5 yrs then put the country in their hands? How would that make any damn sense. Their priority would be for other Zimbabwe nationals and in defense of their Zimbabwe culture and pov. We Need people with BVI culture and perspective and who know our history. That being said it is the right of any BVIslander to run.

Hopefully one of the CoI recommendations is that every candidate for any political office or appointment in the BVI government must sit for and pass a 5 day political exam similar to the bar exam. No books, notes, phones, etc. just the candidate, 3 pencils, 50 blank sheets of lined paper and a 2-3 hour time limit for each of the 10 exam. Typical exam topics are political party structure, Westminster system of government, conflicts of interests, declaration of interests, ministers accountability to auditors, hierarchy of the BVI civil service, etc. The long hand written answers will be graded by external examiners. Passing grade is 70% for all candidates to become eligible for an election or any political appointment.

The world is campaigning towards independence of Euro-order and standards of rule therefore, we have no interest what- so-ever in your suggested exam!

Believe it or not, the decision is already made for the upcoming election (whenever that may be).

The question is which candidate will be the IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE

  • This is so sad. Dr. P will win.. (12/04/2022, 15:42) Like (5) Dislike (2) Reply
Doctor Pickering is going to win ..It hurts, I did my little survey in the district...The people are saying he learnt his lesson and will do better next time...Ignoring all the failures...For me that Brandy Wine Bay Project is unforgivable, almost everyone was telling him Brandy wine Bay is not design to be a Premier beach but he ignored the people and continued to spend millions on the beach, look at Brandy wine Bay beach, Imaging the millions at the bottom of it wasted all by the good Doc....But the people want to give him another shot, they are convinced he learnt and will do better next time ..Good Luck..

Yes in the Spirit Dr. Kedrick Pickering has won the 7th district back.

However, what you need to know is, that CAN BE CHANGED!!!!!!!

The question is WHO is going to change it?

There are waterfalls and water fountains in the desert of Nevada that prove that people are not good at predicting the future. Only GOD knows the future. Man plans and GOD laughs. Do not be so certain of your "little survey"

If you hold people hostage for their past action saying, they will repeat the past in the present, then, you will have to hold others, and self guilty of inability to change.
Dr. Kendrick Pickering's will definitely do much better, if given a second chance. If fact he will serve us better than the others that we know of that are contesting the 7th district seat.
In tough times like now, what profit can we gain by electing novices? We need an experienced person to man at this time, not a leader that need to be trained.
My very strong opinion is that Dr. Kendrick Pickering will score a gold, probably more, if he is given the opportunity by us. He has learnt his lesson well. You may ask, what is the greatest lesson that he has learnt? answer: He has learnt that a leader is no bigger than those that he is leading among other things. That's a good start. He is the best choice of the group.
People of the 7th electorial district, be wise. Vote Dr. Kendrick Pickering as the next representative, come next general election.
