‘It’s anybody's democratic right to run’- Dr Wheatley on Dr Pickering contesting D7
Dr Wheatley was a telephone guest on the Monday, April 11, 2022, edition of “Da Morning Braff” show hosted by Floyd Burnett aka 'Heritage'.
People will have to make a choice - Dr Wheatley
“I think it's anybody's democratic right to run, but of course, I think the people will have to ensure they put their thinking caps on and make a positive choice,” Dr Wheatley said in response to a question from Julio S. Henry.
“One of the things that you’re going to make a choice on is persons' records, so he will have to go and defend his record, and I’ll have to do the same. I have to do the same,” Dr Wheatley added.
Dr. Wheatley added that all parties will have to forward plans and the people will have the right to be able to make a decision for themselves.
NDP failed VI in a number of areas - Dr Wheatley
“In my view, and the reasons why I wanted to run for office, is that I do believe the National Democratic Party administration has failed in a number of areas,” he said.
“Democracy gives you choices, so it’s my right to be able to say I wasn’t pleased with the direction that they have taken us with… agriculture is one," Dr Wheatley added.
Although saddled with many portfolios, Dr Wheatley in his first term as an elected representative was able to, among other things, resurrect the Farmers and Fishers Week, provide a stimulus for farmers and fishers during the pandemic, and has been pushing for legislation to develop the sector.
For instance, the Virgin Islands Food Security and Sustainability Act, 2022, currently in the Committee Stage of the House of Assembly, will place renewed emphasis and importance on agriculture.
Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) first reported that Dr Pickering, who was defeated in the 2019 General Election, is back to contest the seat once more for the upcoming 2023 elections.
More D7 contestants?
It is expected that there will be about four persons in the 2023 race for the Seventh District seat, along with Dr Pickering and Dr Wheatley.
VINO previously reported that, according to sources in the NDP, former banker Kevon S. Lettsome is expected to be their candidate for D7. In addition, residents in the Seventh District have told our news centre that the Water and Sewerage Director Mrs Perline R. Scatliffe-Leonard is considering a run in D7.

The question is which candidate will be the IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE
However, what you need to know is, that CAN BE CHANGED!!!!!!!
The question is WHO is going to change it?
Dr. Kendrick Pickering's will definitely do much better, if given a second chance. If fact he will serve us better than the others that we know of that are contesting the 7th district seat.
In tough times like now, what profit can we gain by electing novices? We need an experienced person to man at this time, not a leader that need to be trained.
My very strong opinion is that Dr. Kendrick Pickering will score a gold, probably more, if he is given the opportunity by us. He has learnt his lesson well. You may ask, what is the greatest lesson that he has learnt? answer: He has learnt that a leader is no bigger than those that he is leading among other things. That's a good start. He is the best choice of the group.
People of the 7th electorial district, be wise. Vote Dr. Kendrick Pickering as the next representative, come next general election.
