“It’s a challenge” – Hon Walwyn on leading NDP
In an interview on JTV’s The Big Story (TBS) Election Edition with Ms Cathy O. Richards, Hon Walwyn further revealed that his party in not having a full slate to contest the 2019 elections in the Virgin Islands (VI), is not in it just to win, rather to be best prepared and to have the best representation for the territory to move it forward.
Best team – Walwyn
“If you listen to the messages… and the rallies and the launches and so forth coming out, you would see that our team is the best-prepared team to take this country forward, you hear the various issues that our candidates continue to speak about and our focus is simply trying to make things better for the people of the Virgin Islands once elected,” he told Ms Richards on the Wednesday, February 13, 2019, edition of the show.
When questioned on how his leadership of the party has been going since taking over as Chairman, Hon Walwyn says he accepts the challenge and is looking to change the face of the NDP.
“It’s a challenge, because we’re now trying to take a 20-year-old organisation and make it more relevant to the needs of voters in the community, we went through a very important exercise right after I took the leadership and I started to gather new candidates,” he said.
No full slate
According to Hon Walwyn, while the NDP does not have a full slate, he has built a team that can make a difference in the territory, “It’s not just about winning for us… it’s not always about having a full slate, we want people who we know can make a difference to the lives of people, and people who subscribe fully to what we would like to see our organisation become to be able to make life better for people.”
Over the years, Political pundits and other party leaders in the VI have accused the NDP of lacking transparency, accountability and good governance.
Further, Hon Walwyn, no stranger to controversy, is currently being investigated for a wall he built around the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) costing taxpayers some $1.6M in a project that was said to be corrupt and having no value for money according to the Attorney General.
Not Afraid
In expounding on his leadership, Hon Walwyn said, “It’s an exciting opportunity… There have been some challenges… I’ve been somebody who has never been afraid of challenges and with the help of God, I’ve overcame every single one of them and this election will be no different.”
