It shouldn’t take HoA Q & A to get info on EE/LL Community Centre- Hon Penn

The refurbished community centre was handed over on October 18, 2024; however, according to Hon Penn, it has not been made available for use by the public.
During the Second Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA), Hon Penn posed questions relating to the East End/Long Look Community Centre to Hon Wheatley during the question and answer segment.
Remedial work still required there- Hon Wheatley
In replying to Hon Penn’s question, Hon Wheatley said the centre has not been made available for public use since it’s opening; however, his ministry is of the view it can be used with limited access.
“Between 2020 and 2024, based on the funds allocated to the ministry, efforts were prioritised to restore the centre's functionality in two phases,” he explained.
Hon Wheatley said repairs and upgrades such as the resurfacing of the tiles in the main hall, the installation of additional hurricane shutters and modifications to the male and female restrooms in the main hall remain to be completed.
However, the facility is fully operational for public use.
“The ministry has been in discussion with the Social Development Department, and instructions have been given to allow the public use of the space in incremental stages until remedial works are completed,” he revealed.
The Minister also said when specific projects are to commence, the community centre will be closed to facilitate them and the public will be notified of any closures.
In the meantime, Hon Wheatley said the teams will work to ensure the East End/Long Look Community Centre is opened in the coming weeks.
It shouldn’t take HoA question & answer to get information- Hon Penn
Hon Penn, seemingly unsatisfied with the answer given by Hon Wheatley, said it has been almost five months to the day since the handover ceremony.
“Since we went up there and had all them big glorious speeches, the Premier, myself and you telling the people that their centre is finally available for use and you coming back to me to say it isn’t. It shouldn’t take a question and answer in the House for this to happen,” he expressd.
Hon Penn said he is “disheartened” they are at this point but remains hopeful that the centre will be opened in the coming weeks.
Hon Wheatley promised, “You have my word I will do my best to get [done] in a short a time as possible.”
