ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Torrential rains, six red cards, 35 goals, numerous yellows, penalties, keepers scoring and keepers missing, all punctuated one of the most exciting weekend of National League football seen this season and through it all the Islanders remained unbeaten smashing fourteen past the Ballstars!

The first game of the weekend saw the hapless Haitian Stars concede defeat after three “sending offs” and a further player unable to continue through injury. By the time the referee was forced to call the game off, the Stars were down 7-1 to VG United and down to seven men.

Three had received their “marching orders” for a combination of foul language, excessive force in the tackle and receiving twin yellow cards. James St Anna had also left the field and was unable to continue having sustained an injury.

The game itself, though, had been far from dirty, but VG were in complete control from the outset, scoring five first half goals. Danny Joseph opened proceedings in the 4th minute before Kevin Mongery doubled the lead inside the first 15 minutes. Then a double strike from David Baptiste on 16 and 25 minutes made it 3 and Aleta Creese adding the 5th in added time at the end of the first half.

Following the break, things completely unraveled for the Haitians, but at least St. Anna pulled a goal back with a delightful long range free kick. However, as yellow and red cards appeared out of the Ref’s pockets like rice at a wedding, Joel Williams scored twice to round off the scoring.

United’s performance was marred with the sending off of Juanito Dias.

If the excitement of the first game was to be matched then the Islanders needed to produce something special against the Ballstars, a team that so often in the past had proved their nemesis and boy did they deliver.

It took just 4 minutes for the game to explode into life when in the 3rd minute Jon Samuel was shown a straight red for a dangerous tackle, reducing the already weakened Ballstars team to ten men.

Five Red Cards how now been brandished in just over 15 minutes of football across the two games!

If that wasn’t enough, the Islanders then tore into the Ballstars scoring six first half goals including a hat trick by Henroy Mitchell. He scored in the 15th, 38th and 45th minutes, before going onto to score his fourth in the 90th minute. Valdo Andersen scored twice in the first half and then added two more in the second. Aaron Bascombe also scored one in each half as did Raymond Cummings. Adding insult to injury, both Islanders ‘Keepers, Shane Henry and Monty Butler also got on the score sheet. Henry, actually playing in goal and Butler playing left wing, netting successfully from the penalty spot.

On Sunday in Virgin Gorda, the Wolues went about the business of acquiring points and staying in touch with the Islanders with a 2-1 win over the rebuilt Lucian Stars. A James Shearman Penalty in the 74th minute giving them a 2-1 victory. The Wolues went behind to a Bradley Henry strike in the 42nd minute but leveled the score just 2 minutes later through Matthew Plimmer.

Back at the AOS and with more rain showers making conditions on the pitch slippery, One Love’s new Coach was able to celebrate a fairly comfortable 3-0 win over the Panthers. Richard Morgan giving them a half time lead before Collin Green sealed the points with two second half strikes. He has now scored seven goals in his last three outings.

With the games kicking off well passed the scheduled times the Sugar Boyz were in danger of their game against Old Madrid not finishing in time to catch the last ferry home.

Almost like clockwork Old Madrid matched their younger opponents endeavour during the first half being unlucky to head into the break 2-1 down. A Derrol Redhead pile driver opened the scoring and a Dion Clarke equalizer almost got them to half time on equal terms, but Everton Perriera who had been a constant threat down the left hand side scored from an acute angle to put the Boyz ahead.

Then seemingly knowing time was against them they upped the ante in the second half and playing fast skillful football scored 3 more goals to record a 6-1 victory. Terrence Baptiste scored a well-placed header following a corner; Michael Castello slipped one under the advancing ‘keeper and Redhead scored his second and then completed his hat trick from the penalty spot just before the final whistle.

Upcoming schedule- Wed 2/1- 7:00PM VG United v Panthers. Sat 2/4- 4:00pm Ballstars v Old Madrid; 6:00pm Sugar Boys v Panthers; 6:00pm Lucian Stars v Haitian Stars (VG). Sun 2/5- 4:00pm One Love v Wolues; 6:00pm Islanders v VG United.
