‘It feels good to deliver the goods for the people of the VI’- Premier
The Premier made the remarks during a ceremony on June 1, 2023, on Beef Island shortly after the Inaugural Flight of American Airlines from MIA to EIS (Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport) landed.
Flights a 'Great deal of progress' for VI - Premier
“This is a wonderful day for the people of the Virgin Islands and certainly it feels good. It feels good as Premier, feels good, I'm sure as Minister for Community Communications and Works [and] feels good for the government."
Dr Wheatley added, “And I feel especially proud to be a part of this historic moment and to move forward the ball, you know, in the tradition of the late greats. It certainly feels good to deliver the goods for the people of the Virgin Islands.”
He told those present that the non-stop flights represented a great deal of progress for the people of the Virgin Islands and will make it much easier for not only the diaspora to visit, but for tourists to travel to the VI at a much easier pace.
“It will certainly enhance our tourism product, as we know that Miami... is the 8th busiest in the United States and the second busiest for international travel, and indeed it opens up the BVI to the rest of the world,” Dr. Wheatley added.
He said the flight will allow hoteliers, restaurateurs, taxi drivers, and more businesses including those who sell arts and crafts to offer their goods and services to the visitors who will be coming to the VI.
“We also must acknowledge that American Eagle and American Airlines were here for many years before, having 13 flights at one point out of San Juan PR to the BVI, and when of course they pulled out of San Juan, it represented a difficult time for our passengers to get here to the Virgin Islands.’
All involved thanks for making flight possible!
The Premier thanked his entire government team and persons who made the project possible including those at the Tourist Board, Airport Authority, and the Minister of Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5).
He further acknowledged the efforts which made by other carriers in getting persons to the VI and thanked all repeat visitors who stuck with the VI throughout the years.
“We have a good record of repeat visitors in the Virgin Islands, but we wanted to make the journey easier,” he added.

Spending an absorbent amount of money on FOOLISHNESS!!!!!!
By the time they finish they’ll be over the same 7 Mil.
Have these imbeciles not learnt from the COI???!!!?!!!
FIX ROADS, EDUCATION SYSTEM, WATER, ELECTRICITY… the BASIC NEEDS!!!!
They are acting like children in a candy shop as if direct flights from Miami is their main goal because one government made an attempt and failed. Meanwhile, the BVI will see the same amount of visitors. It simply means they have a choice other than traveling via Stt so they save time. The taxi men at the airport will not have any increased earnings because the taxis picking up for the charter companies will now be working out of the airport so those taxi drivers at the airport grinning from ear to ear will soon learn what a clock a strike.
So deliver fixed roads , water supply, sewerage leaks, and incinerator.
