Issuance of new work permits never stopped says official

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Despite concerns by some applicants that the issuance of new work permits had come to a grind by the Labour Department, an official in the Ministry for Natural Resources and Labour, has assured this news agency that the process has not stopped.

“We have been bombarded by calls from members of the media and other persons as to why some persons work permits were not granted or renewed. I guess individuals are paranoid since they heard what Dr. Pickering had said late last year that the issuance of new works permits will be reviewed,” the official explained.

Several persons have contacted Virgin Islands News Online to complain that their permits have been declined.

However, according to the Ministry’s official, under the new leadership in the Labour Department many of the applicants are being scrutinised more carefully and if the necessary documentation are not in order “then an application is denied. But as far as I know permits are still being issued.”

Meanwhile, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. Pickering at a community meeting on January 19, 2012 said he is aware of the slow process. However, he did admit there is a backlog and with those are completed, a policy will be in place to grant permits in a timely fashion.

"I cannot say right now that we are going to put a policy in place that say a work permit must be ready in two weeks. But we are working diligently to put systems in place to ensure that we correct those sort of inadequacies and injustices in the system," Hon. Pickering had disclosed.

Not sure who would want you to work for them, you need to go back to school and learn English, I am sick of you people coming to the VI speaking like that {not to say that our locals do not speak like that} we should be looking for workers from overseas who can contribute in a positive manner to the VI and not drag us down.
