Islanders to play Sugar Boys in Wendol Williams Cup Final
In the first game on Sunday December 8, 2013 the Islanders were thankful for a 64th minute cross from Fitzroy Daley to secure their passage to the final as it gave them a narrow 1-0 win over the tenacious Ballstarz F.C.
“It was an attempted cross, I saw the keeper coming central and just looked to place the ball wide of him,” said Daley. “He dived, but the ball beat him and went into the back of the net.”
Islanders Coach, Anreco Ramsey, felt his team deserved their victory. “The team that wanted it more came out winners, we squandered a lot of chances and it was a tough game, but I felt we just wanted the win a little more.”
Ballstarz Coach, Vincent Samuel, congratulated the Islanders, but knew his team had done their best. “As far as I’m concerned we played a decent game and I’m happy with the way my guys played. We dug in, stuck to the game plan, but gave away a soft goal.”
The second semi-final pitted the Virgin Gorda based Sugar Boys, who had won the Virgin Gorda Cup earlier this season, against the Rebels F.C. and after an early exchange of goals at both ends, the game became a battle for midfield superiority, before the Boys ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.
Joel Williams opened the scoring for the Rebels in just the third minute before Leonard Davis equalized in the 10th minute for the Sugar Boys. Davis scored his second to restore the Boys advantage in the 15th minute.
In the second half, Jario Morris put the game beyond doubt and then Davis completed his hat trick to make the final score 4-1.
The game, however, came to an abrupt end, when out of frustration with officials, some of the Rebels players walked off the field, giving the referee no choice but to abandon the game with about 5 minutes remaining.
The conditions were far from conducive to good football, but Sugar Boys Coach, Ladonna Woodley was a little concerned with a lack of discipline showed by both teams. “It was a good game, but both teams need to improve on discipline. I spoke to my Guys, but was disappointed. If we all want to take football to the next level we have to show discipline on the field.”
Hat trick hero, Davis, also noted that it was two evenly matched teams that had played a good game. “They are a good team, but lacked discipline, both teams played well and it feels good to have scored the goals. Playing the Islanders in the final will be a challenge, but I’m hoping that’s a good game too.”
The final is scheduled for Sunday December 15, 2013 and full details of match day plans will be released by the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) later this week.
