Islanders cement top spot with emphatic victory over One Love
Mitchell wasn’t the only driving force behind the win, but scored the opener and from a corner on the left caused complete confusion in the One Love penalty box as Odaine Reid deflected the ball into his own net.
Valdo Andersen then made the game safe in the second half with a powerful header before another surging run by Mitchell was brought to a premature end inside his own penalty box by Gary Hall.
Hall received his marching orders from Referee Eldon Williams and Andy Davis coolly stepped up to fire home from the penalty spot for the Islanders 4th goal under the diving body of Cherwin McLean in the One Love goal.
Although the Islanders bossed the game from start to finish their four goals were spread out, coming in the 17th, 44th, 75th and 87th minutes
They should have also had a 5th when Davis was denied his second after being adjudged offside following in as the goalkeeper dropped a free kick from Nano Ottley
What the linesman saw will never be known but the crowd and the Islanders bench were clearly of the opinion (quite rightly) that Davis had started his run from behind the line of defenders and was in an onside position as the keeper fumbled the ball.
“It was a very physical game with lots of tackles flying around” commented Islanders Coach Avondale Williams “My guys kept their composure; we stuck to our game strategy, scored four goals and came away with the win.”
One Love battled hard defensively for the 90 minutes, but with Collin Green and Richard Morgan unusually ineffectual in attack, they lacked any potency.
A minutes silence was observed before the game started out of respect for the passing of Islanders stalwart Monty Butler’s Grandmother, who was buried on Saturday in St Vincent.
New ‘Keeper Vesquerez Frett was hardly troubled all game as the dependable back line of Ray Phillip, Davis, Ranalie Cains and Noel Isaacs as usual proved too strong for opposing sides and Fitzroy Daley again reveled in his new midfield holding role.
The win gives the Islanders 12 points with only VG United looking like being able to mount a serious challenge.
However the Panthers have a new look team for 2012 and will be worth watching. Their 11-1 win against the Haitian Stars moved them up to 3rd on goal difference whilst condemning the Stars to rock bottom and a minus 26 goal difference.
