TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- Reports are that customers continue to be dissatisfied with the services of InterCaribbean Airways.

For days, many passengers have been speaking to our News Centre about delayed flights, poor customer service, no provision of hotels when flights are cancelled, no meals and sometimes hostile agents.

For the last four days, for example, many of the airlines scheduled flights in and out of the territory have been cancelled, delayed for 7 hours and passengers simply told “we are waiting on the plane to come from Antigua” or Puerto Rico, “we are waiting on a part”, or “the weather is bad”.

Who to report to?

It is unclear whether passengers should report their grievances to the Ministry of Financial Services, Labour and Trade, which is responsible for consumer affairs, or whether it is a matter for the BVI Airports Authority or even the Department of Civil Aviation.

Many dissatisfied and frustrated customers continue to lambast the airline.

Delays & more delays

Today, Sunday, August 4, 2024, for example, there are scores of passengers at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport awaiting InterCaribbean flights.

A flight scheduled to depart at 8:30 AM is yet to depart and another flight to the Dominican Republic was scheduled to depart at 11:00 AM but is yet to depart.

Customers for a flight destined for San Juan have also been delayed for close to five hours and angry customers have stormed the airline’s counter demanding answers.

However, they have been told the supervisor is not present to answer any questions.

The delays continue unabated and seemingly without any remedy for passengers.

This holiday it may be wise to steer clear of InterCaribbean, if possible.

Word to the wise don't book any flights with inter Caribbean except the last flight that's the only one with any chance of being run, they remind me of a ragga car, it runs but you won't like the ride

I am sure the supervisor is hiding, inter Caribbean have the worst customer service ever, I can’t stand them, the hostile staff they have, always have an attitude and can never help you.
I went to Antigua with Winair sometime back and the service was amazing out of Tortola, the staff was friendly, well disciplined and even got the flight out at least 23 minutes earlier than schedule, I hope winair can get some more big planes and put inter Caribbean out

LIAT should be up and running by the end of the month. That according to the Antigua Government. The new name is LIAT 2020. You check the Antigua news site for info on this.

@DEDE, what is in a name? . How will LIAT 2020 be different from LIAT 1974? Was not LIAT 1974 headquartered in Antigua? What is the age, type of aircraft , etc LIAT 2020 is procuring? Does Antigua have the working capital to get LIAT airborne and stay airborne? In LIAT 1974 last days, fees made of the ticket. As Leonard noted above islands were using LIAT as a cash cow, milking the cow with nothing left for the calf. Will this occur again? We can keep hope alive but be realistic.

Common Sense and LOL are the only ones with sense. Time and time again InterCaribbean screws up and people don't learn. In most cases, options exist: WinAir to Antigua, Silver and Cape Air to San Juan, WinAir to St. Maarten. A quick check on Google Flights displays the options.

The government can't make you a smart consumer. If a mechanic repeatedly messed up your car or a hairdresser gave you several bad haircuts, would you keep going back? Would you say the government needs to force the barber to give better haircuts?

Our leaders can’t say that they are for us and allow companies that do not serve our people to continue operating in our territory.
Not only airlines but shipping companies alone… Ezone and Aeropost for examples.
    Look at the economic landscape.
Consumers don’t seem to be of anyone’s priority.

InterCaribbean has left me stranded at my connecting flight with a child… I’m not able to type it all but, this was during July 2024.

A passenger airline is a capital, labor , safety-, etc., intensive service operations/business. Effective leadership and management and the critical passenger load factor (PLF) ( percentage of seat capacity which is filled by paying customers) airline economic factor is vital to keeping an airline airborne. Every flight which takes offs and lands incurs a fix cost, which is covered by paying passengers. Ideally, each flight must have at least have a minimum number of paying passengers to at least cover the break even cost . However, airlines are businesses and must operate at a target profit to justify the investment to stay in business.

Moreover, the region needs a regional airline to serve the air transport needs of the region’s people. LIAT served that role but it is currently grounded( seems as if there are efforts to get it airborne again). I posit that poor management, poor service, many shareholder islands using the airline as a cash cow, etc were contributing factors to its demise. Effective competition delivers lower cost and better service to customers. Customers often have to endure poor service with limited options, ie,,lack of effective competition. Regional countries must come together as a group, pooling resources to provide affordable, reliable, quality, etc air transport services for the region, ie, locals and visitors.

      E. Leonard, I only fly on airlines so I know little to nothing on airline operations and economics. You noted:” A passenger airline is a capital, labor , safety-, etc., intensive service operations/business.” Curious as to what this means and upon BVI airlift?
      • E. Leonard (05/08/2024, 12:48) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
To Bush Professor, you ask about airline operation capital, labor, and safety intensiveness. Simply, it requires cash and other resources, along with much labor on both the air and land sides to operate an airline effectively and efficiently and with strict adherence to safety practices to keep an airline airborne and operating profitably. Of course, the Passenger Load Factor(PLF) is a key metric for an airline starting, staying, or leaving a route.
        • Bush Professor (05/08/2024, 13:24) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
          E. Leonard, thanks. It seems as if it would not matter how long the runway is and how modern the terminal is if an airline is not putting enough butts in seats consistently to be profitable they will discontinue a route. It is all about the numbers. The struggle of small airlines is a bit clearer now. This passenger load factor seems to be a driver..Now, I understand why St. Lucia a few years ago was subsidizing American Airlines flight to keep AA coming. This sample load factor principle can be applied to ferries, buses, trains,,” hotels ( putting heads in bed). Did you study aviation, for you often write about public work / facilities stuff? Why you guys does go way and don’t come back?

The staff at Intercaribbean front desk are not the problem. They are just as frustrated as the travellers. It is a constant problem of delayed flights and breakdowns. I think logistics and maintenance is the problem. Once the planes are operational the customer service will gladly send travellers on their way.
  • Really? (05/08/2024, 16:28) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Plan your travel so that you will be leaving from the USVI. Yes it will cost a few more dollars more but there is no price on your piece of mind, especially when traveling with children. If the US airlines mess up at least they will give you somewhere to lay your head and food to eat at no stress to you. The Caribbean airlines will continue to treat their customers like this because you all allow it. It is obvious the BVI government don’t care about Caribbean nationals coming to and going from the region, they busy trying to catch the white Europeans. STOP traveling with them, it ain’t complicated.

Everyone doesn't have access to travel to the United States. So intercaribbean is the main option for many as they fly to most of the East Caribbean even though they have consistent delays and maintenance issues.

  • What you think (05/08/2024, 18:11) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Yes! Yes, they are. They can't keep to schedule, 12-hour delays (speaking from experience). Some of their planes have a foil odour coming from the toilet and so so much more......either y'all do better or close up shop. If I could I would avoid flying with them again and given what the stewardesses have to work with, they're quite pleasant. #AIRLINEFROMHELL
  • Stress Pot (06/08/2024, 09:41) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Traveling to these islands from the BVI is unreasonably stressful given the exorbitant costs involved. While I understand the airlines are "capital, labor, and safety-intensive operations," it’s incredibly frustrating that a journey to a destination less than two hours away can consume an entire day; Leaving on the first flight in the morning and practically reaching destination at night. To add insult to injury, despite the high price, they don’t even offer so much as a sandwich, cracker, or drink during the trip—you practically have to beg for water. After hours of flying up and down the Caribbean chain, some airlines might give you a child-sized bag of chips and baby box juice.
    • E. Leonard (06/08/2024, 16:24) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
@Stress Pot, I don’t have any dog in this fight but the passenger airline business is capital, labor, safety-intensive with on average a razor thin profit margin. Consequently, airline will work to cut expenses as much possible and practical..Further, every flight which take offs and lands incur a fix cost and that cost is covered by paying passengers. Thus, passenger loading, ie, passenger load factor (PLF) is a driver in the availability of long haul nonstop flights (direct and nonstop flights are not the same). Small locales like VI, along with cities in developed countries such as the US within short driving distances from a major airport, have limited flight opportunities. Leakage in the system is a contributing factor to the limited number flights; leakage occurs for example when residents avoiding flying out a local airport by driving to a nearby major airport or riding a ferry to another island to catch a flight, ie, VI to USVI. The bottom line is that airline economics, ie, PLF, etc, limits availability of nonstop long haul flight. Thus, the annoying, inconvenient, etc short haul flights, or direct flights..

Moreover, airlines have high expenses but they can and should be in their customer service delivery .

Better off spending money and time taking flying lessons and buying second hand Cessna and doing it myself next time. Avoid if you can.

I personally do not fly any Caribbean airlines.I go STT PR or MIA and fly from those ports,if I need to go into the Caribbean. Simply do not take the stress to be waiting on any airline five and six hours.

Those airlines are decreasing your life span by contributing the stress each time you fly waiting for hours to get home.some of you need to start writing the FCC and the Aviation Administration about the reckless behavior of these airlines, they will get their crap together and improve their service so that the license don’t get revoked.
