ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BD Basketball Association launched the 2011 Inter Primary School League on Thursday October 20, with many exciting match ups, but sparse crowds despite the long weekend created by St Ursula’s Day.

Most noticeable with a few welcomed exceptions, was the lack of parents attending to support and cheer on their children as they took to the court to showcase their skills and represent their teams.

The first game saw a comfortable 27 – 12 victory for Althea Scatliffe Primary over Cedar School. Kedrick Matthew top scored for Althea Scatliffe with 8 points, adding 1 rebound and 1 steal. Dante Vanterpool scored 6 points, Malique Wattley 5. Dekembe Parsons scored 6 with 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. For Cedar School, Kai Turnbull scored 4 with 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.

Willard Wheatley Primary then clawed ahead of Alexandrina Maduro Primary in the 3rd quarter to win 20-15, despite Sammuel Gilbert having 8 steals. Germarie Brumant also did his best to keep Alexandrina Maduro in the game, scoring 8 points. Ultimately though, Kyle Penn and Shaqueal Frett, who both scored 8 points, had too much presence under the basket to secure the win. Penn, who was named Player of the Game, also added 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals.

The day’s last game saw Leonora Delville Primary cruised past St Georges Primary, who were perhaps missing the presence of their usual coach, Carl Barrett, who is in Mexico with the Pan Am Games team. Leonora Delville was ahead 13-10 at the half and extended that lead to 19-14 by the end of the 3rd before keeping St Georges scoreless in the 4th to win by 10.

Johangel Rodriquez had a stellar game in scoring 8 points along with 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Terelle Grant scored 7 and Eric Bob chipped in with 5. For St Georges, Deandre Penn scored 4 points with 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, 4 steals and 1 assist. Mohamed Bazour scored 4 and Chaz Fahie 2.

Moving onto Friday’s games, still witnessed by far too few parents despite most businesses being closed for the National Holiday, Joyce Samuel Primary recorded a fine win over Francis Lettsome Primary. Rafique Manning led the triumphant charge with 6 points and 9 rebounds, Donald Frometa added 5 points with 5 rebounds and K’Cei Moses notched up 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, 4 steals and 3 assists as the boys and girls from Bellvue won 21-16. Jason Potter scored 8 points for Francis Lettsome.

The Opening Ceremony was also conducted on Friday with the Honourable Andrew Fahie on hand to give a demonstration of his shooting skills as well as encouraging the children to ensure they get the balance right between schoolwork and sports.

Joyce Sammuel was then brought back to earth by Willard Wheatley and in particular Shaqueal Frett who scored all the points in his schools 20 – 11 victory. Such was the dominance of Willard Wheatley that Joyce Sammuel only scored its first points on the stroke of half time. Kevin Nisbett with 5 rebounds and Kyle Penn with 4 seemingly onhand to mop up any danger caused by Joyce Sammuel. Drexton Gaton with 4 points led the Joyce Sammuel scoring.

On Saturday, 4 matches took place, with St Georges atoning for their earlier defeat in beating Ivan Dawson Primary 27-16 despite the efforts of Daniel Harrigan who picked up 13 rebounds, 3 steals, 8 blocks, 3 points and 1 assist for Ivan Dawson. St Georges was led by Eduardo Vargaz’s 7 points with 6 rebounds, 1 block and 11 steals. Chaz Fahie and Deandre Penn both added 6 points to the total.

Althea Scatliffe then made light work of Joyce Samuel reaching the weekend’s highest score in a 43-24 win. Kendrick Matthew scored 14 points with 5 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 steals and 2 assists. Malique Wattley added 9, Dante Vanterpool 6 and Dekembe Parsons also 6. Rafique Manning scored 12 for Joyce Sammuel and K’Cei Moses 8.

Alexandrina Maduro and Francis Lettsome schools then went into double overtime before the Baughers Bay School “stole” it 18 -16. Germarie Brumant recorded 7 steals and Sammuel Gilbert 9. Jaheem Chiddick made 6 blocks. Brumant also scored 10 points and in reply Jason Potter scored 6 with 11 rebounds for the Greenland’s outfit.

The weekend’s last game was another nail biter as Leonora Delville School was thankful for a strong 4th quarter to run out 18-13 winners over Ivan Dawson. Ivan Dawson were ahead 7-5 at the half but it was all level at 10-10 by the end of the 3rd before Johangel Rodriquez scored the crucial baskets. He finished with 7 points and 4 rebounds with Terelle Grant adding 4 points and 7 rebounds and Eric Bob making 5 steals. For Ivan Dawson, Daunte Scatliffe scored 7 points and Daniel Harrigan picked up 11 rebounds.

Action continues on Wednesday afternoon October 26, 2011 at Cedar International School with the hosts taking on Willard Wheatley from 4.30 p.m.

It's a SHAME to see that parents are so busy and dont have the time to come out and support their youngsters. Not even the school that they are representing comes out to support. Some of these children wait so anxiously for this league to start, so they can show the public what they can do. I am a parent of a player and it gives me so much JOY to sit and watch all those kids play ball. I have a lot of things at home to do just like any other parent, but coming out to support these kids to me is more important.

I give me so much joy to see these children playing and interacting with their peers....and only a hand full of parents...To all Parents a game is only 24 minutes long....can you give your child that much time when they are playing. They need to see that you love them. When parents around they behave even better....So parents show your love.....money is not all.

.....Hon. Andrew Fahie was most present one out of the three days. He also had the time to warm up the Team from his district, the Leonora Delville School. Myron's daughter played with the St. Georges School and none of the days was he there to give support. That's why I like Andrew, he does make the time. If I was in district 1, Andrew have gotten my X but I will vote the VIP at large team--- all the way.

Yes, Myron daughter play with St. Georges and he was not there, but please dont be like that. A child has 2 parents not 1. So although he was not able to make it, his Wife and the rest of the family was there. So please dont bash Myron. The BD basketball games are not about Politics, it's about parents, family & friends & Schools coming out to support the youths.

Myron may not have been there but her mother was there every day. 95% of st georges parents or a family representative was present to their games and even a parent intervened and coached the team as the coach is off island.

this is so normal. basketball, softball..... parents hardly show up. They have these activities as a daycare/ free time pass. They come drop their kids off and when they think its over they show up. It do have some loyal parent(s) that is there. Anyway these kids have talent!!!!
