Intense rivalry expected in Hon. Fraser League Playoffs on Saturday
With no games on Friday October 11, there will be a triple header on Saturday and Sunday.
The first game of the playoffs on Saturday brings together Ruff House and Knights at 5:30 P.M.
Ruff House, which is a team from Belle Vue, have a very strong perimeter game as they favour the outside shooting. The young Shamoi Dagou aka Sham is a top three-point shooter in the league but so is Jevorn Serrant for the Knights. Fans can expect a lot of three-point shots being hoisted.
But according to Coordinator of the League, Mr Milton C. McLean, the difference between the two sides might be the strong inside game of the big Knights’ centre Nigel Todman and the fact that the knights are capable of playing both inside and outside.
The second matchup will be between Avengers and Game Boyz.
Avengers have a very strong team and boast two strong centres in Ricky Conner and Jareem Todman. “Those two are also good on the boards as well as scoring. Conner has had at least three double doubles for the last three games. Also Javin ‘Bucket’ Frett and his brother Radley Stevens aka ‘Real Person’ as well as Shaquille Collins are good scorers. The question is whether they will have all their players.”
Game Boyz are more on the scrappy side but on a good day can upset any team so Avengers would need to keep their guards up and not get complacent. Shaq Fonseca and Terry Charles would be the men to watch in that encounter.
The final game of the night scheduled to get underway at 8:30 P.M. is expected to be a classic encounter between keen rivals Talk Done and Top Shottas.
“Both of those teams have predominant players from the East and so it will not just be about advancing to the next round but about bragging rights. Talk Done may have a chip on their shoulders as they are the number one team in the entire league after playing 7-1 in the preliminary round of the league but suspect that they don’t feel respected just yet so I think they still have something to prove….Talk Done is very talented probably the second best team to Avengers on paper,” Mr McLean commented.
Top Shottas will be depending on their scoring machine Tyrone Barnes Donovan to click early. However, Mr McLean believes Donovan would need more support from the other players if they want to beat Talk Done.
“I think they tend to rely too much on one or two players, which is not the best thing. And if ‘Lucky’ can step up more rather than playing a little too unselfish he can make a difference. But don’t underestimate Top Shottas, those guys can play and they would like nothing more than to beat talk Done. “
All in all basketball fans can look forward to an action packed weekend of basketball at the Save the Seed Energy Center in Duffs Bottom.
“Believe me, the games are going to be really good. The first game of any series is a pivotal game. Usually the team that wins the first games have the confidence and momentum. So expect some really good games this weekend,” Mr McLean concluded.
Meanwhile, on Sunday West Gunners will take on Da 3rd from 5:30 P.M.; Game Boyz will challenge Avengers from 7 P.M. and Knights will battle Ruff House from 8:30 P.M.
Admission to the games is $1.00
